hi guys, i just wanted to put a little post up this morning in light of some not so lovely emails i've received lately. i don't know what it is about my website that inspires such hatred (maybe all the "super!" and "awesome!"s ?). either way, i've decided to employ words of wisdom from my web idol, dooce.
this is her credo, and seeing as she seems to get a lot of hate mail too, i figured it was fair. so, this is the new perspective round these parts:
"I really enjoy reading your stories and your responses to what I’ve written, but if you feel that you must send me something hateful I reserve the right to publish your entire email and your email address on this site. This is a personal website, and while I understand that you may disagree with me on many topics, there is an obvious difference between disagreement and hate. If you are having feelings that you want to cause me harm, please take a step away from your computer and take your pills. I take mine. Also, comments left on this site are the opinions of the people who comment, not necessarily the opinion of dooce.com and dooce.com cannot be held responsible for the content therein."
insert design*sponge for dooce.com and there you go. i always welcome constructive criticism and hearty debate, but calling me a bitch or tell me i'm a stupid liar, a paid operative, or some other lovely assemblage of expletives is uncalled for. so, that said, thanks for listening.

This is why I hate people. People suck. Like darcy-I never would've guessed you would get hate mail. Just put it behind you and keep getting enjoyment out of doing this blog.
One suggestion-categorize your posts and/or search function. there are things I want to go back to but I can never locate them!

I can't believe you get hate mail either! I check your site religiously and although I can't afford most of the items they've been great inspiration for my homemade knock-offs!!
...and if you get some hate-mail repeat offenders you can always sign them up for a bunch of spam ;)

For crying out loud...D*S attracting HATE MAIL?!?!?!? Can you imagine the lack of self-actualization, perspective, and general merit that a reader would have to be toting around in order to feel inspired to write an angry email in response to an entry about cute pillows or sassy rubber bands?
These idiots need to cut it out and leave you alone. You don't have time to deal with haters! Your time is so much better spent finding new goodies for me to covet wantonly!
i never would have thought you would get hateful comments. not only do you post about inherently pleasant and interesting stuff, but you do so in a particularly friendly, intelligent way.
i'm usually wary of the old "they're just jealous" rationale, but i really can't think of a better one in this case.
I'm shocked to hear you receive any kind of hate male. Your site is both super and awesome—you have The Eye. Anyone who offers an opinion to the contrary is a douche (pardon my French) with too much time on their hands.
Though I certainly am not guilty of sending you any hate mail, I can't say that you're 100% undeserving. You have insulted people's hard work in the past (i.e. you were very "underwhelmed" by the jewelry submissions for your DIY contest. you also criticized DIY web sites.) If you're going to dish it out, you've gotta take it. I appreciate you taking the time to share all of your cool finds. But now i bypass your "super dooper" opinions and just look at the pretty pictures and go to the links.
I'm not surprised that you receive hate mail. It goes with reaching out to so many and having opinions of your own. There are very negative currents at work in our present society. A misguided, but growing segment of the population feels that hatred is a worthy demonstration of their belief system, whatever that system happens to be. An AP story this week tells of Jewish cadets at the United States Air Force Academy being called "dirty Jews" and "Christ killers." Over 90% of the cadets are avowed Christians. An official of Focus on the Family stands behind the actions of evangelical Christians at the academy, claiming "there is an anti-Christian bigotry developing" there. Presumably, that would be among the fewer than 9% non-Christians in attendance. Hate is fast becoming an American value. I realize your site is neither religious nor political in nature, but you have placed yourself time and time again in the liberal camp. According to a number of books featured at Borders last week, depriving you of your civil rights, arresting you without charges, and even hanging you in public as a traitor to America, would be only too good for you. Good Americans must learn to hate liberals. Not hating them is nothing less than being one of them. Calls to hatred are everywhere. The Inquisition burned millions of women at the stake. Millions, not hundreds. It took one complaint to haul them in. They were tortured, invited to confess, then burned. Children in Nazi Germany were rewarded for turning their parents in as being anti-party. Many of those were gassed along with the Jews, the Gypsies and the Gays. A dark age is a dark age. Expect more of the same.
My criticism of your site is that, by and large, what you cover is far too "cute" for my personal tastes. Having said that, I can't wait to see what you’ll cover next. I saw the Zia-Priven lamps—I can't imagine what you see in them—before I learned about Pope Benedict XVI's election. After I read that, I went back to look at the lamps again. I still don't like them.
Wow. I think your response to the haters is a good one, and I echo the surprise that others state at hearing you get hate mail. Regardless of whether I like everything you post (not a big fan of pillows in general!) I like the spirit with which you post it. Maybe I'm just not passionate enough about design to hate you ... or, maybe my passion is just enough to appreciate all you do! Either way, I just wanted to drop a note to thank you -- yours is a site I look forward to checking everyday. Chin up, post up!
I've just recently discovered your blog, and I just want you to know that so far, I've enjoyed everything you've shared. I also think it's crazy that you get hate mail (especially for simply expressing your opinions). Thanks so much for sharing your great finds!
By the way, some of you may find it interesting that I'm a conservative Republican proudly residing in a red state! (Grrrrr, aren't I scary??-- kidding, of course) Here's the really crazy thing-- I'm also an Art & Design major who constantly lobbies her Republican friends & representatives to support the arts! And guess what? They do. For example, my Republican representative recently got funding for an arts center in our revitalized downtown district. Anyway, not trying to stir up trouble, but I just wanted to say that people don't send you hate mail b/c they're conservative, they send you hate mail b/c they're stupid.
I love your site. I was looking for more paper and letterpress links, and one of the first places I checked was your archives. You've got so much good stuff here. If being awesome inspires hatemail, that's pathetic.

Hate mail?!! Totally shocked. I for one LOVE your site and check it everyday. For those that hate - all you have to do is leave and let the rest of us enjoy this lovely site.
People need to get a life. Instead of infecting yours. Misery does love company but I think the way you responded is awesome. Just refuse to play the game. People that are so negative usually want to pull you into their sick little world and get satisfaction of making other people as miserable as they are. It's so very sad and disheartening but true. You have to feel sorry for people like that, who are so unhappy they have to bash other people who are just expressing themselves. Waz up with that?
:) Keep it up. For every butthead out there there's a good, kind person lifting you up. It seems that way from these comments. Even if it's 10 jerks responding and only 2 great people, those 2 great people are usually so warm and cool that it tends to make up for the others.
That said, you could also just say @#$!% em! :) Their problem not yours.

Perhaps your repressed suitors are jealous like me but find thir only way of getting through to you is through hateful, ill-mannered messages. I can understand that. Or perhaps they're just repressed. Or German.

Dooce is amazing and so are you. Haters are just lonely, insecure peole trying to make themselves feel better by attacking others. Everyone has their own opinion. Obviously, if you are looking at this site, it is to read someone ELSE'S opinion. Evan Jones, whatever you are rambling about has nothing to do with design. And the Zia-Priven stuff is amazing and has nothing to do with the Pope. It is just classic design, and this is a blog of opinions, if you don't like them, write them in your own unimaginative blog.
