project runway: spoiler below (watch out!)

pr

ok i'm live blogging this: to quote ac this episode is "weak". lame idea, lame ploy to get vincent back and just, well, boring. can't the design be the focus again? remember season one when we were blown away by the actual clothing? i miss the clothing!

ok, i feel sad for laura. i think she misses her family and doesn't seem to be used to negative critiques. there's something about seeing someone mom-like cry. makes me sad. ok, on to the runway show. poor kayne- he's as tacky as all get out. hopefully he'll go out on a dress that HE likes...if no one else does.

while we were watching angela and vincent get cut down for their work ac said, "that's why they were cut" so matter of fact-ly. best way to sum it up. why bring back people who clearly needed to be cut? i'm hoping they go with kayne. nice guy, tacky outfits. and hooray for michael and laura. so cute.

hooray! what a great ending. i'm becoming a laura fan. can't wait to see what uli does next week to be different. i love when the clothes are what we talk about instead of drama with vincent. ok, feel free to talk away

The producers really screwed this up!

It was cathartic to see both go, and to have them both back is particularly annoying - doesn't make me want to watch but to turn Bravo off!

I tell ya... I cannot decide who I want in the final 3... each brings something to the table... but I am leaning to Michael, Laura and Uli... but rock and roll can look pretty damn fresh... I cannot wait for next week!

Me, too! I'm banking on Michael, Laura and Jeffrey. I think Uli might slip back into the hippy flowy dress thing. But I'd love to see her step away from the summer of love fabrics and do something more tailored. Although I think I'd love to wear all of her dresses during the summer.

I'm sure they'll keep Jeffrey around in the final 3 to add drama but his stuff is just so heinous. That was like trashy crap from Hot Topic, not a cocktail dress!

Bringing back the rejects did not add any sort of drama. At no point did I think either would win, and I don't think it added any fear for the other contestants. In the end, the expected person was "out". But, I do not believe any other designer would be out with the cute boat neck Kayne created. History just added up. Jeffrey's was silly. I am so sick of Uli...though I liked the necklace, but not with the dress. Michael's was stunning. I think I would have liked Laura's a little more if the sleeves were slightly shorter, but it was really beautiful. I felt bad for her, but every other designer has been subject to much more ridicule. I think maybe her pregnancy hormones took over, and I am glad she's finally won a challenge!

Is it sad that I get almost as excited about reading your PR blog post as I do watching the show?

Glad to see Kayne go, and even MORE glad to see Jeffrey get knocked down a peg. I would love to slap him silly (talented or not!).

Yay for Laura - she does everything with such class and excellent craft.

But Michael - I'm pulling for him all the way to the end!

Overall, though, the episode was a yawn. They should have brought back Alison.

Michael is so sweet and cute, I noticed that he said "Congratulations" to the last several challenge winners with a smile as they walked by him. He's totally drama-free and full of talent. I was so happy to see Laura win with that very pretty dress, her best work so far!

I also noticed that overall, the designers this season are more "nitchy" than last season's. Seems like everyone's got one theme that just overdefines them and they just run with it! Michael is the most versatial so far out of this lot.

10:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with Michael being the most versitile. But, I can't help but love that uptown-baby-factory-tell-it-like-it-is-Laura. I am glad she won tonight. Loved her dress!!! Uggghhh. Vincent gives me the skeeves. He totally makes my skin crawl. And a Top Chef preview!?!? What a crazy night altogether!

alright, so overall the show was a disappointment, but two things did stand out:
1/at least nothing "got Vincent off" during his (hopefully) very final appearance on pr.
and 2/by far the highlight of the evening was Zach Braff imitating Tim at the end of his commercial... carry on...

My god, could the show seem anymore manufactured. It used to be so good, but it just seems now like they set it up so it would end this way, they should have brought back Alison, she might actually have won this challenge. If they do another season I truly hope its more about design than drama, because I have to agree with everyone—boring!

I am glad Laura won. It was just "sad" to see Vincent & Laura there. Sort of like confirmation that yes, they really needed to get aufed -- like you were bad, now you are really really bad.

I thought the "use every scrap" part of the challenge was lame.

7:39 AM
Blogger design*sponge said...

yeah, i sort of felt like the entire episode was kind of grasping at straws like. um...we'll...bring back the losers! and then you um...have to use all the scraps! and then...three of you will go!

hopefully season 4 will be more about the clothing and less about creating needless drama.

i'm terrified to see what they do to the next season of my beloved top chef.

I'm sorry but did I hear correctly when Vincent said in his exit interview that he had a "gift"??!! LOL
And I totally agree, the 'every scrap' thing was daft.

I hate to say it buy I think the show jumped the shark, which is what I said as soon as they brought Vincent and Angela out. Now we know for sure the producers gave Vincent that win just to bring him back.
And poor Tim Gunn. Did you see his face when he had to tell the designers they had to use all the fabric? That's not design--that's a gimmick. And I went to bed without watching the rest of the show.
I remember being so inspired by season one and watching it over and over. Now I probably won't even tune into the finale.

8:43 AM

I totally agree about the lameness of "use every scrap of fabric" -- it was a ridiculous gimick that had nothing to do with design. Although it was interesting that the better and smarter designers used their scraps more creatively.

If Michael doesn't win, it will be a crime -- he's been the best, most thoughtful, most creative and most versatile all along. He's really the only one that seems as if they could pull off an entire line of clothing and make it coherant and intersting.

Uli does that same neckline on every single outfit (including the ones that she wears). Her dresses are usually pretty, but there's no way you can give someone who does the same thing every time their own show -- it would be deadly boring.

I predict Laura, Michael and Jeffrey as the final three, although Jeffrey's cocktail outfit was atrocious. If Kayne had actually used some white in his outfit, the producers would have been hard-pressed to keep Jeffrey after that awful mess he put on his model.

9:04 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Before last night I would have said that the final three would be Michael, Uli and Jeffrey. Definitely Michael (hands down the best of them). And Uli was on up swing with her couture gown - if she had done something a little different this week, I think she'd be in a better position. And I thought Jeffrey because he clearly has "mad skills." But now I think Laura just might make it through all the way, and I don't know whether it will be Jeffrey or Uli.

I liked the idea of a black & white challenge, although I agree about the scraps thing being too gimicky. And bringing back that auf'd ones was just too much of stretch. I hope that someone at Bravo is reading the blogs and catches on to the fact that we want more design and less drama!

I think the final three will be michael, laura, an jeffery. Did you see the handbag that laura made? It was amazing. Jeffery's dress looked like it came straight off the sales rack at urban outfitters. I'm rooting for michael to take it all. I must agree with previous posters, he is the most ranged out of them all. Uli should take notes from pucci and missoni, although they have a signature look, they have a broad range of styles. In addition to gorgeous dresses, they have a variety of other pieces. She's a one trick designer and I can't see her being in the final three.

I was as disgusted as the remaining designers seemed to see Angela and especially Vincent back. It was a totally stupid move that certainly pleased no one. And the scrap gimmick was ridiculous and the designers mostly treated it as such. I agree that if next season continues on this trend the show will not be worth watching. Clothes? Design? Please?

am i the only one who finds michael completely boring? well actually that goes for laura and uli too, i mean yes, they make nice clothes but they're all just sooooo boring and nothing at all new. i don't think i'd be compelled to buy any of their clothes if i saw them in a store. i miss santino.

Interesting show, huh? The producers seem hell-bent on making the challenges as hard (read: ridicuous) as possible. C'mon- Using every scrap of material for the final design???

But, hey, it's still a tv show and also real life in professional design has challenges that appear even more nonsensical at times.

Uli, Jeffrey and Michael are all very talented. My choice for winner is Michael Knight. He's got the most refined and innovative sensibilites and there is a quality about him that will help him rise to the very heights of his profession- He's a real gentleman (and Jeffrey acts like a spoiled child). Did you see Jeffrey run into the waiting room at the end of the challenge giving everyone the finger? That's something that a 12 year old would do. Besides, the "rock" image thing is over. 'Been done to death in the 90's and he doesn't really bring anything fresh to it. (O.K. Jeffrey, we get it- you're al about "rock n'Roll.)

Can't wait to see the next episode.

I think it would be very different if the judges had to judge the outfits without knowing who did what.

Sorry, but Jeffrey has thrown up some LOSERS. Some winners too, but last night if you didn't know he did that, you might easily think Angela did (and vice versa)

what a terrible show! use all of the fabric? who does that in the real world?????!!!!!!!!!!! NOBODY. michael kors has NEVER used all of the fabric before in his life! argghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as much as it is killing me, i do believe that uli is not going to make it... i do think that it will be laura, michael and butthole.

mommy to mommy... i was feeling laura last night... i kept telling my husband that her poor hormones are acting up like crazy... when you are pregnant, you are just not yourself... so again... i salute her... it is not easy dealing with such stressful situations and being pregnant... trust me, being pregnant is enough... especially when you start showing and getting bigger...

but i love michael... a handsome man that can make clothes is almost as good as a handsome man that can cook! LOL!

if laura gets through, i will be happy with that for sure...

poor kayne... who is going to make me laugh now?

even though vincent is kind of weird, he seems to be a good person... i was glad that HE finally made a comment about jeffrey's negativity... it was about time (even though he did not say his name... you knew to whom he was referring)

I am sorry that Kayne had to leave, but I agree that he had to leave. He was really entertaining. I was happy for Laura that she was able to change from her usual style and that she won. Ulli is able to one thing well, but she clearly cannot break her own mold. Jeffery is an ass hole and pouts when he doesn't win. Those leggings! Oy!
Michael is just fabulous, versatile, and thinks the whole thing through. I think he has a real gift. ANd he doesn't have to do outrageous to be a little edgy, stylish, hip and fresh. I think he could win it all because he has consistantly done really well.

Am I the only idiot who actually thought the two guests were going to be Mary-Kate and Ashley? I'm laughing at myself as I type this, but I take the previews of next week's episodes too seriously. I'm not old but I usually end up going to sleep early - PR is on really 'late' for me. When Vincent and Angela came out I said to my husband "Oh no, I was hoping for Olsen's". He said "Do you think they would actually be on this dreck?" In retrospect, I guess not, but then Nicky Hilton was, and Sasha Figure Skater...
I was happy to see Laura won, she has grown on me. I thought her dress was darling. She's obviously on an emotional roller coaster right now, bless her heart. Michael remains my favorite and I agree with whoever above said he is the most versatile. His designs feel fresh, modern, and urban. Most importantly, he always has good reasoning behind his designs and defends his design choices eloquently during the judging. Although the contest is (in theory although perhaps not in practice) about design and not about personalities, he is grateful when he wins and gracious when he loses. Even when Jeffrey makes something great and wins, he is so nasty to others - negative and egotistical - that it makes me like his design less.
Oh well, just one more challenge until fashion week. I would love to see it come down to Michael, Laura and Uli.

We finally got cable and I was so excited to see PR. Now I'm bummed that they're turning it into just another bunch of gimmicky reality cliches. Can't the producers understand that there are PLENTY of viewers out there who enjoy DESIGN for it's own sake? Plus if you put all those strong personalities together the drama comes naturally. You don't have to create it with all these lame "twists". Arg.

Michael is vesatile and classy. I think Laura actually has the Mad Skilz if she can just think outside her own box. Jeffery -- snooze. Uli -- sweet, but getting snoozey too.

I agree Kayne had to leave, although I'll miss him (not his clothes). But, although I liked Laura's dress, I was a bit annoyed at her for being so daunted by a single bout of criticism from the judges. I know her hormones must be going a little crazy, but has anyone else been peeved that she's been so free to criticize other contestants but can't take a touch of heat herself? I still think her stuff is well-made though...

My husband is an architect and made the same comment about Laura - "What, she's an architect and she can't take a little constructive criticism??" I think her reaction to the criticism was more about being 42, pregnant for the 6th time, being away from her family and being on a reality show competition for something she has never done before than it was about an inability to handle criticism.
The "use every scrap" rule was just ridiculous.

i looooove laura. i think laura is fabulous in that, god, i wish i knew her way.

coming from a creative background myself, i know how it feels to be criticized and it would still bother me even if i didn't completely love what i was presenting. i could be weak-skinned, but it feels as if everything you create is a part of you if you are truly invested and it takes a while to build up the confidence from scratch. i'm sure in laura's case the whole switch of interests makes it that much more difficult when viewing the overall scheme of things.

but, michael for the win b/c he is deserving in every way possible.

last night's bit bringing back angela & vincent was definitely a waste of time. i like the idea of the designers presenting their work anonymously. since their styles are pretty distinctive, this could be taken a step further and each designer could create an outfit in the style of another contestant's work (but not *for* the other designer a la PR2) to keep the judges guessing.

at least it would be fun to see how michael would have edited glitzy kayne's creations and we could see what jeffrey could do if he was forced to work with angela's fussy doodads.

at the very least it would take the designers out of their comfort zone. ;-) no more flowy muumuus for uli . . . immerse yourself into laura's classic style and make it work!

5:49 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is the first week that I've actually agreed with everything the judges said. I really feel for Laura - I hope she can physically make it to the end without her hormones doing her in. Her dress was perfect. I liked Uli in the beginning but she's only got one idea, and I'm getting tired of it. So Michael, Laura and (though I hate to say it) Jeffrey for the final three. Oh, how I miss Santino!

11:50 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The lamest part of the "use every scrap" thing was that most people just stuffed it into purses. Not to mention Angela didn't even make her purse?

And something random occurred to me - I know they're not supposed to leave production, but they probably allocate someone to take Laura to the obstetrician?

There was only one second that I liked Jeffrey so far - when he made that joke about Angela being the "SPECIAL" guest... I actually laughed out loud. I wonder if he REALLY designs for all the celebrities he says he does? Doubtful.

I also wonder if they ever went up and talked to that person who threw eggs at them in Paris?

8:20 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the final three should definitely include Michael and Laura. Although Laura's designs are not particularly hip or edgy, her craft is impeccable and she has shown that she can design clothes that people could (and would) actually wear. Yes, even young people! if she sets out to design for them. What ever Laura does, you can be sure she will do it very, very well.
Michael! I love Michael! He is far and away the most consistent, broad ranged, coolest designer they had on the show all season. (Although I loved Allison, she was so talented; she could have been in the final three, but she was a little inconsistent and opened the door for the idiotic judges to eliminate her.I still want to throw bricks when I think about that episode.)Anyway, back to Michael- he leaves all the rest in the dust. Plus, he is handsome, sweet, and knows how to keep his nose clean! Out of the whole Season 3 crowd, he is the only one I could actually imagine being "America's Next Great Designer." Right?
I like Uli and I love her clothes, but she doesn't have enough range. I know she will be hugely successful because her clothes are beautiful and she embodies that whole aesthetic so perfectly. Jeffrey the Troll will never make it in the real world, because he has the singular ability to alienate everyone who crosses paths with him. Plus his clothes, while arguably hip, are so f*ing ugly!
I hope that next season, the show gets its eye back on the prize- which is that its viewers take this seriously, that we are not troglodytes who want all drama and no substance! Let's focus on seeing some great talent and a real competition!

So, has anyone taken a peak at the runway photos from Fashion Week? I just did. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else though. I have to say, I was surprise at who my favorite was. Overall, I was not that impressed though. This season hasn't been the greatest.

I was very surprised that no one pointed out what seemed to be the obvious about Jeffrey's outfit this week: it was Valley Girl, circa 1983, with fetish-ho leggings on top. Really - that was a total early 80's mall outfit. I remember seeing things like that at Mandee when I was a kid. I was expecting better from him, even though I don't like his personality, or most of his work. I do believe he's talented, but rather tasteless, and quite behind the times in his notion of what's "hip". It's annoying when anyone claims to be avant-garde nowadays, in any art form, because there is no longer any such thing in this aesthetically pluralistic time. He lost me in the first episode with all his celebrity namedropping, especially when he referred to Jennifer Lopez as a "rock star" (!). I'd like to know what's in his record collection, since he's always banging on about rock and roll.

I hope Michael wins the whole thing. I'd like to see what he could do with his own line. He has a kind of effortless cool. And Vincent should just be designing for drag queens.

I become more and more disgusted by the producers (and judges, perhaps) of PR. Bringing back the two worst and most loathed designers for another chance to fail?! And fail they did, again. Big surprise. Totally boring. And throwing in the "every last scrap" bit just made it more obvious that Bravo is really grasping to make their "twist" more dramatic.

I've loved PR because it's inherently interesting to see talented designers work through these challenges and then see the end result walk down the runway. This season however, the show has been cheapened. And just when I think it's at its worst it sinks lower.

C'mon Bravo: Let's see a real design competition, instead of some heavy-handed attempt to inject sensationalized drama into the one reality show that could actually stand on its own two feet.

was I the only one who actually though the "use every scrap" twist was a good idea. I also liked how they brought back the apsst challenge winners, seeing as it fits witht he fashion world. Just because you're out one week, doesn't mean you can;t come back the next. I loved this episode and feel that you guys should just give it a chance instead of beating down every change that happens.

From what I've seen from the runway show so far, it looks like Jeffrey's collection is a bit more classier than the stuff he usually does, which is nice. I really hope he wins. It stinks though, I agree with what someone said earlier, that each designer has their own style and nothing else. When looking at the runway show pictures I could identify the designer without even seeing who did it, except for a few items.

Did anyone else see the Getty images from Fashion Week? Michael's model Nisreen is seen modeling for Uli.

That would seem to imply that Michael is not in the final three.

"Sorry, but Jeffrey has thrown up some LOSERS. Some winners too, but last night if you didn't know he did that, you might easily think Angela did (and vice versa)"

what an interesting point! i didn't think of that but now that you mention it, its very true. that vampire color could easily be part of a jeffery rocker look, and jeffery's "forever 21" with hooker leggings outfit had a floopy top similar to angelas ugly skirts. funny how they hate each other and came out with interchangable runway looks.

as almost everyone else, i want michael to win. its all been said above, but he is just an all around great person and designer. laura is my second fav, and i cant tell who will be the third..i dont care for either but uli at least doesnt make me want to throw something at the television.

Oooh! The Getty Images tell all!!!

What I find so interesting is how SIMILAR a couple of designers are in parts of their collections.

are you all for real about laura? all she really does is recreate the same dress, it is as if she learned to make one dress really well, so that is all she makes. uli is about the same. michael and jeffery are the only two with any talent. they each have gone wrong, but i'd say only once. the fact that jeffery is the only designer, who truly made a couture dress, and a beautiful one at that, says something about his level of design.
overall this season is lame. the judges are predictable and michael kors needs to be replaced. it would benefit the show to have an avant-garde designer, instead of one that does a glorified banana republic.
