fuzz face
i must must MUST make a disclaimer before this post. if this is actual fur then SHAME SHAME SHAME on you, xs couture. but, if it's gorgeous fake fur then YAY YAY YAY for you, xs couture. (i'm kinda scared it's real....eesh). anyway, i found these via josh spear and thought they were painfully cute. a bit unnecessary (ok, a lot) but totally fun and silly. can't find much info on pricing, etc but what the hell- they're fun to look at. and imagine how nice that fuzzy, warm (fake!) fur would feel on your freezing hands in the winter. mmmmm....so warm. so, hooray for xm if it's fake and booooooooo if it's real. boo real fur!
editor's note: eeegads! it's REAL! thanks comment-er! but no-thanks to xs! boooo!

It's surely real fur. Under "Material" they list "fur, leather stripping, suede lining," not "fake fur." Still, a Vegan version of their fur cozie wouldn't be hard to make. Would be more washable, too.
Fake fur sucks too and this is why. If something is made out of fake fur and is popular, it popularizes the item but deemphasizes the pedestrian (or, in this case, humane) aspect of the item (i.e. the "fake" of the fur). Why else would they try to make it look so real?? So then, a parvenue or an incredibly out-of touch with reality person who can afford the real thing is further encouraged to do so as it sets them apart as even more elite (ostensibly). In other words, a fake fur purse, hat, jacket, napkin ring is popular not because it's fake, but because it looks like FUR!!! If a person can afford the real thing, they WILL, but only if it's popular. And those that can't (and even those well meaning who think fake fur is okay and real fur is gross), just popularize it. Even if you say real fur is bad, if you wear or buy fake fur, I think you're still sending a message.
That's just so gross.
1. Caffiene addiction is so 2002.
2. Fur is so UES-trash.
hmmm, well. i disagree, but that's what's great about design- there's always something else on the way if you don't like the current thing.
i personally don't have a problem with this cause i like the fuzzy aspect. i don't happen to think it promotes an idea of killing animals. if i did, i would be the first to condemn it. i'm a regular animal freak.
but, thanks for sharing the thoughts- glad to hear some different opinions...

I think this is a very witty piece of work. It comments on the idea of luxury -- and in New York, that little brown ring signifies that you paid at least 2 or 3 bucks for your coffee, instead of 80 cents from the cart on the corner. The fur just takes it to the next level.
That said, I agree that fur is yucky. If you're living in the forest and you need something to keep you warm, then go ahead. But most of us aren't in that situation.
Interesting analysis of fake fur vs. real fur, too.
BoingX2 (as the kids call it these days) just caught this, with brief mention of real v. fake.
But, alas, not via d*s.

i am intimately familiar with the furcozie (and the designers) and i can report to all of you that it is faux fur. the website is purposefully misleading for many reasons (to generate dialogue and to emphasize the tongue-in-cheek excessive target market for example). they will be available in 2005 for purchase.
FURCOZIE IS MADE OF FAUX FUR!!
The images on your blog was from our company website, XS Couture (www.xscouture.com or www.furcozie.com) owned by myself and my design partner, Wil Ayers, who originally designed the Furcozie TM (or what you would call the furry coffee sleeve). It was designed in 2002 as a Cranbrook Academy of Art Graduate project and introduced at the Milan Design show in April of 2003. It has gotten press from Blueprint Magazine, ID magazine and Dwell and in many blogs in the US and overseas since the Spring of 2004.
The Furcozie TM is made of synthetic faux fur and leather trim. There was an article in Dwell that told everyone that it was real fur- which lead everyone to believe it was real fur, but it has NEVER been real fur that we used. It's just really great looking high quality faux fur.
We are in the process of manufacturing a variety of Furcozies TM (in different faux fur colors, trims and and faux fur patterns) to sell this year. We appreciate all the blogs, comments and enthusiasm for our product!
As for the JavaWear product, we have no relationship whatsoever to the company or to the design of their product. It seems that their product came out after ours.
People who are interested in inquiring about the Furcozie TM could contact us by email on our website www.xscouture.com at info@xscouture.com. Our website is currently being updated and re-designed for online purchasing of the Furcozie (TM) this year.
Many thanks to reader Bryce (fellow Cranbrook Alum) about crediting my design, also crediting my partner Wil Ayers on Boing-Boing.com.
It's Dada for the Starbucks crowd! I think it's hilarious! Since fake fur is made from petroleum by-products, it's less ecological than ranch-raised critter.
In the UK to drink from the furry cup is a euphamism for cunnilingus
LOL
you americans are so ZANY
