dorothy draper

the work of dorothy draper has always held a special place in my heart. her masterpiece, the greenbrier hotel, was a short drive from the summer camp in west virginia where i spent my most memorable teen years. we only visited the hotel once but it left had such a huge impact on my sense of style. the teals and pinks, bold patterns and effortless grace with which draper decorated the hotel have always impressed me. so when i'm feeling uninspired some days i troll the web looking for draper (or draper-inspired) pieces. this beautiful floral draper mirror and black and white chest are available at capitol furnishings and steven sclaroff. i love the grandiose scale of her work and the way she contrasts dark colors with bright pops of white. you can find more information on dorothy draper's work right here...

I'm originally from WV, and I remember being awed by the elegance and ornate surfaces at the Greenbrier as a little girl, but I didn't know the mastermind behind the beauty. I'll definitely plan on another trip back!

i was visiting my sister in Lancaster, PA just this past weekend and went to a Mud Sale (a fire company sale right in Amish land) and they had TWO dorothy draper chests that auctioned for peanuts!! unpainted but very well kept. wish i could have grabbed it and carried it onto the plane right back to melbourne, australia.
