D*S CONTEST!! (woohoo! hey! look here!)
hear ye, hear ye, on this 18th day of february let the search for the best in independent, diy design begin!
in a world where it's so easy to lose track of what's really important about design (the process behind the product: the joy of building and designing things by hand), i thought it would be great to celebrate all of the talented designers out there who have yet to be noticed! so....
* submit your work via email with a short description, images and some fun things about yourself (like, do you like ice cream? oh really? what's your favorite flavor?)* i'll take entries from today through next friday and announce the winners on monday, feb 28.
* entries are divided into the following categories: furniture, product, jewelry, graphic and other (bc i hate to leave anyone out).
so...tell a friend, tell a neighbor and spread the word! let's celebrate the diy-ers out there who are making great design a reality. d*s salutes you!!
update! please please please only send attached pictures (not just a link) and a description of the product and you (via email, not the comments section please). and remember diy, indie design can't be something that's being produced by a manufacturer...thanks!Labels: diy

well, i'd prefer people who are independent, so preferably people who haven't been "discovered" yet. but you know, if you've got a great diy design that you did, send it in and tell me the deal behind it. i wouldn't wanna restrict anyone just because they already have their own store...

(you dont have to be a "designer", the title doesn't mean anything really- you just have to have a great diy design to submit!)
There are some great Austin (Texas) designers out there!

Friends of mine made their own clothing security product. Would their work qualify or is this just for handmade cards and bags? Are there any entry requirements posted? I would like to pass that info around. Thanks for having this contest.

I used to work for Herman Miller (as of two days ago...) Not all the HM stuff is signed unfortunately. There are a bunch of copies and most of the copies are really bad. The proportions are wrong so the chair is not comfortable and the leather is crummy. Plus - the fake veneers have a really bad tendency to delaminate. Not all the HM stuff is signed unfortunately, but save your money for the real stuff - its worth it.
thanks for answering the eames question!
as for contest details- see above. basically any and all diy, indie design. no products that are already owned and made by manufacturers, but that doesn't mean just handmade bags, etc.
it can be furniture, product, jewelry and graphic design.
email me if you have anymore q's

"Designer does not mean anything"
Yeah, sure, everyone is a designer, just like everyone is a dentist too.
Design is a skill and talent.
a title doesn't mean anything. i believe firmly in this. you can have skill and talent and not have a title. design shouldn't ever be thought of as so elite.
would the eameses or the harry bertoia be thought of as less talented if they weren't called designers? i don't think so.
an open mind and less rigid standards are always the key to discovering true talent. even if it doesn't come with a title.
