last, desperate plea

z

so, this is my last gasp- the apt hunt has totally gutted me and i'm starting to believe that there are no good brokers anywhere. i mean, literally, anywhere. so, i thought i would check with you guys out there and see if you had any broker advice.

if anyone has ever used a broker in brooklyn and liked them, could you please please please pass them along? we've been lied to so many times that i'm starting to think they get paid to lie. the little d*s apt details are: 1br, no ground floor apts, cats allowed, $1400. areas: cobble hill, ft. greene, clinton hill, carroll gardens, boerum hill, park slope (fifth ave area, you know, near the fun stuff) and brooklyn heights. or if anyone knows of an area of williamsburg that has trees, we're in. i don't think it exists though. anyway, that's it. my last gasp. i appreciate any help at all, brokers, real estate companies, management companies, anything. i also appreciate your time and listening to my play by play of the horrors of apt hunting. all my deepest thanks, d*s

Jill Braver at Brown Harris Stevens in Brooklyn Heights helped me out sooo much with apartment hunting. I still go to her for advice even after I bought my place. Give her a ring, she's great.

What's wrong with the ground floor? Granted, many ground floor apartments have low ceilings, but this should not be a problem for miniature people such as yourselves.

You've probably thought of this already, but have you at least tried craigslist? They seem to have a pretty robust new york listings page... worth a shot at least

Hi Sponge,

I have a lovely apartment in Brooklyn Heights (rent 1650 a month--more than you're looking for, I know, but it's rather large). I found it through Lisa Sulfaro at Corcoran--when we looked last year, she showed us a place on Remsen Street, right near the promenade, for $1500 that was GORGEOUS. The only reason we didn't take it was that my boyfriend objected to the "Murphy Kitchen" it had. Pish. I would have ADORED living there--it had every little detail you could possibly ask for (fireplace, wood detailing, incredibly high ceilings, etc.). She also showed us other places in the Heights and Cobble Hill for between $1400 and $1700. Give her a call or check out some of her listings online--she's young and quite nice. I think she'll understand what you're looking for.

best,
Meredith

Okay, this might be a little biased, but my husband's aunt and uncle own Heights Berkeley (in Park Slope) and Cobble Heights (in Cobble Hill). We'd like to think that we're nice, honest people, and we think that our aunt and uncle are nice, honest people too. They've owned these realties for over 20 years now, so other people around Brooklyn must agree.

Anyhow, give them a call: Jeri Griffin at Heights Berkeley and Rod Murry at Cobble Heights. They usually just handle sales, but they could refer you to someone else (equally nice) in their offices.

Hi Spongie,

I know you said Brooklyn but I have to tell you, when I lived in NYC I lived on Roosevelt Island and it was great. There a 4 building luxury complex called manhattan park that has highspeed elevators and the works. I had a flex-one bedroom (we put up a wall and made it two) and it was 1695 a month and first and last month free. Roosevelt is on the F-line and feels like you are living in a happy tree-filled village. There a grocery a short walk to the subway. The best park, they have a broker they work with and THEY pay all broker fees. Al good deal all around.

I've used Femi at Fort Greene Realty, he was pretty honest, although I did already know which apartment I wanted since I had a friend in the building.

My husband Hiro is a broker for Ardor Realty - He is extremely honest and caring about whomever he is showing aptartments too. I highly recommend him not just because he is my husband but he is a hard worker and would NEVER EVER try to cheat or trick anybody....

Hi d*s, being from Boston I don't have advice for you, but like Penny I just wanted to let you know I'm also sending good apt. hunt vibes your way! I know how hard it can be. I looked at 9 apartments in March and didn't like any of them for one reason or another. I'm trying again for Sept. 1 when the rental market here is better. My friend and her fiance just looked for five months when they were buying a house and just found one that is the home of their dreams, and within budget too. Keep looking for your home, you'll know it when you see it!
