help? please?

so, ac and i invested in zip car and we love it. we're planning to make a run for it and get out of town next weekend for a friday to sunday thing. we wanted to go somewhere beachy, but have no idea where to go or where to stay. we were going to go upstate to hike but it's all booked up. anyone know of nice places to go (with a beach) that are a decent drive from the city (i know there will be miserable traffic on both friday and sunday)? i've never been to the hamptons, and i know it'll be full and crazy pricey, but does anyone have suggestions? we'd love to spend less than $200 a night if possible. anywhere on long island? jersey shore? thanks for any suggestions...we need to get sun. it's my mission to avoid the nyc pale-face this summer. xoxo, d*s

Cape May at the southern tip of the NJ shore is very nice. Very Victorian, lots of B&Bs, interesting feel. Or you could try nearby Wildwood, which is more of a boardwalky kind of town, and architecturally very interesting for someone into mid-century modern. They call it "doo-wop architecture", with lots of neon and concrete, very kitschy. It's a fun place. There are a ton of motels in Wildwood, and the beach is absolutely huge.
- driving upstate towards the berkshires has tons of little motels along the way - not a lot of beaches, but lots of lakes all around and GREAT restaurants.
- check out the northfork of long island (more relaxed than the hamptons) and b&b's that might be there.
How far upstate do you want to go? Lake George Village is kinda fun, out of the way and will be an experience.
if you're up for camping, i'd highly recommend fire island (the part that doesn't allow cars though, is the nicest)... and you can take the lirr to patchogue, and just hop on the ferry. the beach is amazingly beautiful.
If you can't leave your love of design behind, you should try staying at kate's lazy meadow hotel, which is a cute spot near woodstock owned by one of the B52's:

OR, for fancier digs, try field farm, a beautiful modernist B&B in the berkshires:

Also - Wildwood, NJ has great beaches and doo-wop architecture - funky old motels!

Enjoy!
Forget Fire Island. The campground is packed in summer (and at this time of year the mosquitoes are fierce!), and the few hotels are as well. F.I. is a summer resort, meaning rentals. I have a house there in an isolated community, and trust me, there's nothing available. Sorry.
I'd like to throw Mystic, CT. hat into the ring. The town is abosulutely charming, if somewhat overrun with tourist checking out Mystic Seaport. The selling point for you, is that it is a hop, skip plus jump from Rhode Islands beaches. Misquamicut, East Beach, et al.

I'm the one who said "no to Fire Island", but I have to second Montauk and the North Shore. Sag harbor is pricey, but all around that area are B&B's and funky little hotels. The North Fork is great, and there's lots of little farms and wineries and whatnot. There's also the Shinnecock Indian Reservation that most people don't know about, not as a place to stay, but to visit, and it's incredibly beautiful there. So it's what, 2 1/2 hours drive at most. One thing: the traffic on Friday and Sunday evenings is sheer murder, and for that reason, we go out Friday AM and return Monday AM. Surely you can take a half day off extra to get some much needed rest :).....
I would try southern RI I know it's a further drive but it's a different crowd... And there's spending the day on Block Island. The beaches are pretty good with soft sand that is hard to find unless you're out on the tip of LI.
oh no! i was going to ask if you were able to come to the Renegade Craft Fair on the 25th & 26th in brooklyn. can you hold off on getting away a little longer? if you have to go, i'd recommend Shelter Island, i think it's a little hipper than when i was younger, but the historic SI Heights are great to walk around. and, of course, i second visiting my little state of RI!
i've been reading your site for a while & kept meaning to say thank you for sharing so many beautiful things - so, thank you!
I second Block Island. It's my favorite summer destination ever. I'd suggest staying off the island and taking the ferry in for day trips, unless you can find affordable housing on the island. Staying off the island gives easier Newport access too.
