I personally like the whole graphic botanical thing. But my designer radar is saying this look is well past critical mass, and is almost becoming nausiating in its pervasiveness.

kinda like when everyone began copying Ryan Mcguiness, Jonathan Adler, eva zeisel,

or when you would see granny smith apples as accesories in every photo of an interior. which later became busts of buddha...
and is now the louis ghost chair.

I don't know...I am just getting so tired of looking at it. It makes me wonder how the pendulum will swing back.

anyone else?

I have to agree. As a graphic designer, I completely identify with the whole nauseating feeling. Makes me not want to even look at their website. Along with the bird thing, it's completely tired and I think it just goes to show that not everyone is an instant designer just because you can "cut and paste". Along with the bird motif, I think people need to work a little bit harder to find creative solutions. It's all part of the challenge :)

i've been debating about responding to this whole thing but my curiosity got the better of me. here's my feel with graphic prints: as much as i totally agree that they are pretty much saturating the market and i'd like to see something different, i still appreciate looking at it when it's done well. in this case, i like the contrast of the colored botanical prints on the natural cardboard colored paper, so i decided to post them. i agree i'm a bit over the trend, but for some reason i still have a soft spot for it. you know, like reality tv or something. i know i shouldn't be watching america's next top model 4 because it's played out and just another reality show, but something makes me turn that dial and i can't help myself. just like graphic botanicals, i'm always drawn to them. and in the world of d*s, i tend to post most resources i come across that get a reaction from me one way or another. i figure most people can handle it if they don't like it and if they do like it, then heck, they have a new resource for graphic prints. i try to remember that not everyone reading the internet (and this site) is as over indundated with this style of print. perhaps someone out there can't find enough of it in their hometown and this website will be a great resource for them. i try to always keep that in mind.

hey there miss D*s

I hope you aren't offended at the negative comments on this whole graphic floral trend. And I would hope you NEVER edit your intended content because of random subjective remarks like mine.

because the reality is that I think there are several types of information we (designers not genrela public) glean from your site-

1) is what is going on out there in a variety of mediums
2) How much of what is going on out there cross references each other.
3) how to adjust your products and their success by learning 4 and 5
4) how to avoid being a sheep.
5) how to be more sheep-like

while I am over the prints, I am still glad that your post help me internalize my thoughts on a trend and helped evolve my next stages of thinking around them.

in other words...don't ever change.
you are too useful too me!

good point d*s. and as a designer, totally understand that everything is just a repeat of something else. there is no new design. however, with all the past posts you've had, i think we've seen enough of the botanical prints, birds, etc. there are many more designers out there who are creating designs that cross boundaries. would really like to see more of those. i notice that a lot of your posts seem somewhat contemporary and safe. and for someone in the midwest observing from their hometown, i think it would be very interesting to show them something that they absolutely would never find in their hometown. just an observation.

my posts aren't about being safe or unsafe. anything on my website happens to be up here because i personally like it. no matter what i put up someone has beef with it, so i'm just doing what i love.

it's hysterical because i just got an email from someone saying my posts were too out there and that i should try things that real people would buy. so, someone's safe is another person's "unsafe".

hence, i will continue, as i always have, posting what i find interesting. i am always open to new finds, suggestions and "unsafe" designs- if you know of them please send them. if i like them, i'll post them like always.

in the meantime, i'll continue to post what i like, safe or unsafe.

IN DEFENSE OF THE BUDDHA HEAD...

At some point (however brief) everything is fresh/new. Every trend has a starting point. At that starting day or month or season, many stylish folks purchased the Buddha Head. Or ghost chair. Or both. Now what? We own these things. If they are overdone, they are still quite lovely and quite expensive. I'm always eager to see what d*s has in store for me to coordinate w/ my buddha head. I'm sad that everyone (incl. Wal-mart) has my buddha head, but can't just pitch my whole place every 6 months. What is a girl to do?
