hell is getting colder...

1

well, i never thought i'd say this, but i think i'm starting to like karim rashid.

i can't believe i wrote that
on wednesday i watched the premier of the new usa network show "made in the usa" and found myself falling for the big, crazy, over-the-top man that he is. now, let me clarify that i still don't like his blobby graphic furniture and packaging designs but, that said, the man is hysterical. he's the simon cowell of the product design world- and i love it. it's taken a few days to sink in, but i think this might be my new favorite show, until project runway starts again.

basically, the show follows 6 teams of hopeful product designers that will compete, be judged by three "celebrity" judges (karim himself, joy mangano from the home shopping network and the founder of chuck e. cheese) in hopes of winning a one-year tv shopping network hsn sales contract. everyone knows that hsn can make you millions (hello, blowout?), so i guess it's a good prize. i'd still prefer some sort of fancy vacation or cash prize in addition to the hsn contract, but i guess if you've sold your house and car to fund your dream of designing a non-chemical, temporary hair highlighting system (he's in there), this prize is for you.

but enough of that stuff, on to the good karim talkin...let me say, after he told someone, "i didn't study design for 20 years to sit here and judge that" i knew he wasn't half bad. his snarky comments (although i see it as necessary honesty, i mean some people need to be told not to sell their souls in hopes of making it big with a beach towel that has a pocket for hair accessories) combined with comments that inevitably come back to color and style are fantastic. i love that he always says things like, "i love your use of color...this needs more color...think more about the color and design". i love it. he's so design driven i can't help but love him. still, love him, not his designs.

so, as much as i can't believe i just blogged about liking karim rashid, i highly suggest the show. it's a really great look into the difficult, crazy, exciting, creative, draining and ultimately passionate world of product design. plus, i think the guys with the quad zipper are going to be HUGE. (great design AND good looks? come on...). [made in america airs on the usa network wednesdays at 10 pm est. enjoy and lemme know what you think of the show!

DOnt' fool for his cheesy swill, that dude has got a huge ego and sadly not the talent to match it. He should go back and study design for another 20 yrs because frankly this guy gives you Americans a bad 'design' image.

To Totally dismiss Karim's work is just stupid. You might not like his work visually but it is still of value. Have you ever even opened any of his books? Probably not. The fact that just about everyone in this country has one of his trash cans says he has talent. So what if he is a big self-promoter, its nothing different than any Hollywood star would do. It's good for the industrial design industry to have celebrity's, it makes the rest of wold interested in what we do.

Stop being so bitter, it will get you no where!

Love him or hate him you gotta respect the guy for what he's accomplised thus far. He's taken a once relativley unkown field known as Industrial Design and brought it to the masses. He's helping to educate the average person about design, which ends up helping bring attention to other designers.

His pieces of late are pretty well forgettable, but the man pumps it out. They can't all be winners, but at least he's doing something. Plus I love what he's doing with his Interior Design projects.

Not everyone will like the same thing / style. Which is a good thing i'd say. But at least show some respect.

Oh honestly, must we use phrases like "you Americans"? I'm from the Netherlands and we know very well here that America is home to a lot of amazing designers--some of the best the world has ever seen. Don't be such a smart-ass.

Hi, Design Sponge,

I liked your review of "Made in USA". I haven't seen it yet, but I'll tune in after reading your comments.

But I fear that with Karim's celebrity and vast over exposure as a designer, we have another "Tyranny of the Latest Design God" to deal with.

Like Stark- who one year was espousing the democratic virtues of mass production and the very next year at the ICFF (after being hired by Emeco to re-do the old navy, metal desk chairs) he was "ga-ga" over the individual, hand-crafted aspects of Emeco's production facility. (Whatever will get you written up by William Hamilton in the Home Section of the NY Times, I guess).

Rashid and Starck both get the masssive press coverage- and the corporate atmosphere of the manufactoring companies dictates that it's always safer to hire a celebrity than to take a chance on an unknown designer. There is tangible job security in this approach. You can always say that it was something other than the designer that you hired that made it flop in the market.

Anyway, I don't care for Karim's work, but it sounds like he is a real hoot on the show. Hey, after all, a show about "design" is alot more positive than all the other junk that has filled the airways for the last 50 years.

Best Regards, Art Donovan

Hey, D*S,

I just watched "Made in the USA" for the first time and in the first three minutes of seeing the contestants, I gotta tell you that the winner will be "Gorilla Gripper"

If you saw the hospital records of injuries to crafts, trade and design people from hauling full, 4' x 8' sheets of plywood and sheetrock, you would be astounded at the high number of injuries and subsequent surguries directly caused.

I wish that Gorilla Gripper was on the market 30 years ago.

Best Regards, Art Donovan
