abitax

1

abitax is a great japanese design group that designs some fun accessory-type home and personal products. i'm liking their colorful coin purses, keyholder and outdoor ashtray (even though smoking is bad. bad!). you can find more information on abitax here, and you can purchase their products at rare device in brooklyn.

You know, I read this every day, and generally enjoy it, it's like "Lucky" for housewares, never really any criticism, but, ok. I am getting increasingly annoyed at how you choose certain people to push, over and over and over. Can we get a little more variety? We all know about Rare Device and Rena Tom by now. Do you have any investment in her store? Because it sure seems like you do.

anonymous-

normally i don't respond to things like this, but i thought i would, just for record, clarify.

i have never and will never accept money for posts. haven't you ever been a fan of anyone and what they do? i happen to really believe in certain designers (like rena) or people in the industry and like to update on what they're working on when they have new thigngs. the logic that "we know about them already" is faulty in my opinion- it's far from true that other magazines and design blogs only post about certain designers once. how many times have design magazines posted about people like karim rashid and frank gehry? to suggest there is no variety on d*s is silly in my opinion. i post close to 50 times a week and the occasional rena post is hardly getting in the way of the site's "variety".

I meant that we know about her shop and work from YOU, not other sources, I have no problem with this, actually, that's why I read DS! Perhaps you're not aware of how many times you've pushed her shop in the past month or so? How about mixing in some other Brooklyn shops? It's great that you help your friends, but it's getting a bit obvious. Delete if you like, I've made my point. The investment question was facitious.

Just to clarify one last time...

I don't post about Rena (or anyone else for that matter) to "help" them. Surely I'm not naive enough to think "press" of any type doesn't help people, but I post about things from Rena's store (or any other stores) because I like those THINGS, not the store. If they're at Rena's store, I'll source her. If they're at another store, I'll source that too, but several of the pieces I've sourced to Rena this month were available only at only Rena's store, hence her being the only source. If they were at other Brooklyn sources surely I would source those too.

I am a HUGE supporter of brooklyn design and have certainly given Brooklyn stores a huge amount of my attention- I consistently source The Future Perfect, Spacial, Cat Bird, Matter, Loom, Nest, Sterling Place and Living on Seventh and many others, so I don't think I'm favoring my "friends" over anyone. If any of these stores carried certain items I sourced to Rena then I would certainly post them.

anon, do you happen to be a brooklyn shop owner? i am suspicious over how much these rare device postings have bothered you. i've been reading d*s for a long time now and there have always been posts on rena tom way before she opened her store. please explain your "increasing annoyance" further.

hey anon, now i feel vaguely embarassed. i am wondering if you would feel less annoyed if Grace didn't mention me or my store, but she still reviewed the products?

i am always pleased (and surprised) when i get a mention on this site...because it is really about promoting the designers. that is why i link to every designer i carry, on my website. if my shop gets a mention, all my designers get a little boost. i have already heard back from a few who have gotten new accounts due to this, and all i can say is YAY! maybe then Grace will review their stores too :)

An example: I've been buying this stuff at the other places for about a year:

Bubble Roome, ALSO available IN BROOKLYN at:

Tarragon, Atlantic Ave
Sodafine, Dekalb Ave
Spacial ETC., Bedford Ave
Housebroken, Vanderbilt Ave

and two locations in Manhattan.

I am a video editor, BTW.

Oh for goodness sakes- are people really going to get all hung out about sourcing?

I've read this blog for almost its entire existence and the fact that D*S mentions Rena's store for a few products doesn't bug me one bit.

So what if you can list a bunch of stores that carry soaps? I live in Illinois and quite frankly, it doesn't make any difference to me. They're all not in my hometown, so as a reader, I don't care. (Personally I'd love to see some Chicago stores...) You seem totally hung up on something for some reason. I don't get it.

Also, it seems that everyone here is missing the point. The posts you're complaining about are about items: purses, ashtrays, etc- not about Rena's store. I remember the big post on Rena's store and since then all of the posts that mention Rena talk about something being available at her store in one line. I think it's stupid to ignore the entire length of a post and focus on four words: available at...

Really, you seem hung up on three words out of a big post. I don't get it.

Meg
-who would love to see a Chicago or Urbana store get sourced a lot, then I'd have a new place to go to :)

I just went into Rena's store this very day because of your suggestion and love love loved it. It also got me to go into many other stores close by and buy things too, not just from her!

the comment about "pushing" friends is not unwarranted.

it's well known that grace pushes her PR clients without disclosing the fact that they are clients.

it's not terrible but borders on unethical.

Just another jerky Anonymous.

D*S clarified that misconception after her NY Times fiasco. Catch up.
