project runway

project runway

i'm a huge fan of this show and have avoided gushing about it too much this year (i'm not as impressed with the designers this season), but i've gotten a ton of emails about the show so i thought i'd open it up (since it's design related)- what did you think of this year's cast/talent? who do you think will win?

pic_eps_rate_daniel_v_ep9

my thoughts? i can't get enough of tim gunn (or santino's version of tim gunn). i want santino to win, at least he's taken some chances (and well, they didn't all work out). daniel just isn't my type (and is it just me or did his model lose a lot of weight during the course of the show?). i saw some shots of the runway shows (click here for spoiler photos) and i still like santino the best (though he clearly can't fit a garment as well as daniel and chloe can...sigh). i miss jay and austin. anyway, chat away...

Me too, Grace! I watched two back-to-back episodes last night - I agree with everything you've said...I want Santiago to win too simply because he fits into the world of fashion design. Daniel, to me, seems too green for the industry, a tad insecure about his work. If you don't believe in your design, no one else will. Chloe doesn't appear to want to get back into the business, she keeps talking about the hard life, how she's not so sure, how she moved back to Texas to get away from it, etc. She's a good designer, but enough whine, already! I'm glad Kara is gone because she just didn't walk the talk. Santino is bold, confident, and very determined. He is also a quick thinker. Although it's not my style, I appreciated how he casually got around the whole sleeve falling off question from the panel. "We were so excited out back after the runway show that I hugged Kara to hard and it came off" (or something like that.) When no one else on the runway commented to his obvious white lie, I thought "Stand up for yourself people! This is a 100,000 chance to get seen, open your mouth! But nope. Mum was the word. I think he'd fit into the fashion world - especially since he's so over the top creative, tall and lanky, and has such a determined stance on everything. Love the way he holds his cigarette, too. ;)

Have a nice weekend, sponge queen!

I love Project Runaway but this season took me longer to attach to any favorites. At the moment I'm pulling for Chloe...but after sneaking a peek at the runway pictures I am most surprised and impressed by Kara! Too bad that she got eliminated this week. I miss Jay too.

Thank god that you are finally posting about the show!! I cannot stand scoping the web and reading what non-design savy people have to say about the show. People get sucked into who is "nice and sweet" rather than who has talent and is actually creative!!

With that said Santino has so much creativity that the other lack but his design talent should have evolved over the season. Last year there was more of a competition with much more talent!

I also cannot stand Daniel V. Why of why does he keep winning? I think its because he is safe and the judges are biased.

That is my soupbox, now I must get back to work....

have you checked out the tim gunn podcasts? they're fantastic, he's just so fun to listen to. and great dirt from the show too. example: tim TOLD santino that the fabric he picked out for the "inspiration" show was austin scarlett fabric while they were at mood. santino should have known better to still use it!

oooh! i missed that podcast! i'll have to check it out. i'm rather obsessed with tim gunn. he's just so cute.

does anyone else think he mighta been close with emmett? he said he'd known him for a long time and he seemed to be really soft on him and pretty protective. and he actually criticized a judge in ref to him (ie: calling his iceskating suit "vulgar"- although i agreed it wasn't at all)

ps: isn't santino great? such good tv!

I love the Santino/Tim impressions too. They are dead on! And the whole Red Lobster thing. Santino seems like he would be fun to hang out with because he is such a scream.

I thought that Nick was very classy when he was asked about the outfit that Chloe made for him and he said he would wear it (even though behind the scenes he said he felt like a first class flight attendant on British Airways.)

I feel like Kara's designs have sucked in the past (the caution, no trespassing dress was absurdly boring), so was surprised to see her make it farther than Nick.

I also thought Andre was great and hit an unlucky break with the flower dress.

Haven't seen the Kara episode yet-- it's all DVR'd.

I am a recent addict to this show and am sad to hear that last season was better. I haven't enjoyed a show so much in a while.

I think Santino is very Cavalli.

I think Daniel is going to win.

I like Chloe a lot too.

I hated all the makeovers. And it pissed me off that Santino essentially designed his own makeover then Kara got all the credit for it.

In addition to enjoying the fashions they create (fingers crossed that Santino wins!!), I have found myself laughing to the point of crying while watching this show on more occasions than I can count.
Santino's impression with Andre and Tim going to Red Lobster was priceless. After that, the funniest moments were
1. Daniel V. with his "It's a mother f*in walk-off!" comment. My boyfriend and I have been throwing that phrase around - too fun!
2. Emmett's comment when he was eliminated "Was it the shirt?" He was wearing that hot pink ice skating outfit shirt. Classy, cute... miss him! Hope he makes it as a famous menswear designer one day. Would date him if I weren't involved already. Interesting question D*S about Emmett/Tim, definitely a possibility.
3. Loved Santino's Michael Kors impersonation this week. Hope he does more!
Ciao and Happy Belated Valentines Day, dear queens and Queens!

I love Daniel's designs. His inspiration orchid outfit was gorgeous. I enjoy Santino but he has no follow through. His garments are never finished, or well-made, or flattering. As Tim said, he's a bit of a one-note. Please lose the braided fabrics as a halter or bodice. I simply can believe that the gold paillette dress is wearable. It had movement, yes, but it was an awkward, unplanned movement. It's true that haute couture sometimes tends toward the conceptual, but it is saved by exquisite construction. Santino has been kept on for the drama of it; no way was his outfit for Kara better than Nick's for Daniel (I agree that no pockets was a mistake, and Nick did not construct his garment as well as he had other creations but at least he didn't tape it together). Kara deserved to be dumped for failing to admit that the jumpsuit was an atrocity and didn't fit. Her tears afterwards were just crocodile tears in my opinion. It was a total travesty when she turned on Chloe and chose Santino. She's a worm who turns.

Daniel should win. He's won the most challenges and his clothes actually look like they could be produced.

i HEART Santino. Everything about him.

That's all I can say.

"she's a worm who turns" ?

ouch!

i agree that it's really, really disheartening that santino seems to be lacking the basic skills for garment construction that everyone else has- it bums me out. if he could sew more professionally i think he'd have daniel v beat for sure. but for now i think daniel will win, and might actually deserve to, because he knows how to construct well. i still think he's about as interesting and visionary as a piece of cardboard. ok, well, a bit more than cardboard, but i just love a little pizazz to a designer, you know? santino has my heart, now only if he could only fit a garment properly.

oh, and to address the one note thing- i saw an interview with jay in new york mag, or time out ny (he was such a brat!) where he said that the one-note criticism the judges gave was crap, and i agreed, here's why:

jay's point was that people like galliano, calvin klein, dolce and gabbana, versace and betsy johnson would probably all be considered one-note wonders if they were on that show because they have a very distinct style, and it's that very formed "style" that people call one-note. i happen to agree, i think santino just has a very distinct look (albeit not sewn well) and i think it would be hugely popular now. his first dress and the one for nicky hilton (if sewn better) would be a hit on the racks right now. i think they're super wearable and i'd wear them if i could pull them off.

anyway, jay said "everyone has a style, that's why calvin klein makes f*ing tunics and betsy johnson makes babydoll dresses" or something like that...you get the point.

other than that, jay really was a brat, bashing zac posen like no one's business. he also apparentl turned down the prize money and now complains that he gave his life, time, etc on the show "and didn't get a penny"

um, jay? they offered you lots of pennies, maybe you should have taken them?

Am I the only one who hates Santino??????!!!! Good design is about putting the whole thing together, he is all show, quick lines, bad construction, and outright mean. I guess thats what is a requirement for American TV: tension and someone to hate. Daniel is by far a better designer, Chloe doesn't want it bad enough. She should have been gone before Kara. Maybe because I live in the midwest I would like to see one of our boys win, Go Daniel, you can have Santino!

Sorry, but for me the most wearable from day one still goes to Chloe. She is so consistent with her designs and really seems to make an effort to deliver wearable and flattering pieces! And for me - that has win all over it.

I concur with the negative comments about Santino. He's a total jerk, his designs are terrible, and he can't fabricate a garment properly to save his life. Sure, he was "risky", but in the same way every time. Did anyone else notice that he also has a terrible visualization of the female body? I don't believe that any of his designs fit the models appropriately or made them look attractive in the least. Many of them had waists that were way too high, and ill-fitting bottoms.

Thanks.

Also, I forgot to say, Santino is the "Wendy Pepper" of this season. There always has to be a "Wendy Pepper". At first, my wife and I thought that it might be Zulima, but it turned out not to be. I also loved the fact that in the first episode, when Wendy showed up to greet contestants, they all ignored her.

I just discovered this show a couple of weeks ago and I cannot get enough, it was like, wow, where has this show been all my life!? I think Daniel will win, Santino kindof annoys me, but most of all none of them are consistent enough to really impress me - I would be a horrible judge!

OK, as far as Jay not accepting the prize money, I have heard that the designers must agree to the Banana Republic internship to get the prize money. It's a package deal. And frankly, I can see why Jay (and many other designers) would not want to work for them. Banana not exactly "runway" material. Regardless, he was a brat in the interview. Agreed.

With regards to the runway collections that Chloe, Daniel, Santino and Kara designed: Where was all of this colorful, beautiful stuff during the show Kara??? I really enjoyed her runway collection and found it much more intersting than ANY of the others. Even Santino toned down his style for the final collection. Chloe, Daniel, and Santino's runway collections looked so bo-ring, especially compared to last year's shows by Jay and Kara Suan.

Damn. Jay McCarroll has become the biggest prat. Did you see when he guest judged? He thinks himself the biggest revelation ever to hit fashion. And I used to be such a fan! Calling Heidi a 'twat"? Seriously, Jay. Hire thyself a publicist!

I just saw the spoiler photos. Holy crap. Kara's collection is actually interesting! Who knew she had that in her? I thought she should have been voted off weeks ago. Santino's is surprisingly not so interesting--his fabric choices look a bit drab. I was a huge fan of his in the first few weeks (his first dress was divine!), but his style seemed to devolve as the show progressed. Chloe's runway collection had some provocative pieces and they look really well tailored. And what is up with Daniel's collection??? I LOVED his "orchid" outfit and thought he'd pull out all the stops for Fashion Week, but it's totally not cohesive and dare I say, a tad boring. I guess out of the three, I'd have to vote for Chloe.

I dont' understand why everyone is bashing Santino about his inability to sew!!! Like any of the Donna Karan's or Vera Wang's or even (yuk!) Zac Posen knows how to sew and finish a garment properly!!!!
I have news for you, that is why people hire seamstresses and patternmakers!!! The designer has the vision and gets the credit, and his people do all the work....do you really think that Carolina Herrera would take a pen and design an outfit? No, she has a "Creative Director" who designs...but she takes the bow at the end!!!
Oh and Jay did not take the money , because it would have meant to give 10% of his profit ever after to the sponsors of the show....and to be honest, if you would be an upand coming designer, would you wanted to be associated with a Banana Republic mentorship? That is so totally outside of everything new that a young designer should stand for....
anyway, that was my rant....

Okay, first of all, some of you are obviously not regular viewers if you think Santino is more talented than Chloe. I'll admit that he may be more creative and "fun" in his designs, but out of the 10 things these designers had to create, maybe only TWO outfits were wearable. Good lord... did you SEE what he did with the lingerie? Are any of you WOMEN? As Nina Garcia said, it was OFFENSIVE!

Secondly, Santino already got his big fashion break by being the standout hit of the show -- he will not win because the winner will become an apprentice at BANANA REPUBLIC. Can you all see Santino at Banana Republic? That would be like his fashion pergatory.

And that means Chloe will win. Because while her last gown sucked, I think it was because she was burnt out. And if you listened to Tim Gunn's podcast, he believes that all four of the designers felt exactly the same way as her (not sure if she really wanted all the responsibility of success) she just said it out loud. Seriously, to become a major American designer would change your entire life. She's smart enough to know it.

And finally, Tim knows Emmett because he said in the first show that Emmett was his student at Parsons. Whether or not there's more, I doubt it. But I think they'd make a cute couple.

Oh one last thing: Andre was a WAY better designer than Kara. She lucked her way into the final four, just like Wendy Pepper LUCKED her way into the final three last year. She was truly undeserving to be at Olympus Fashion Week.

I go to FIT in Manhattan for interior design (naturally) so you can imagine myself and my entire school are ravenous for Project Runway. Daniel lived in my dorm last year and worked at my school up until last semester. Big ups to FIT alumni! I also wouldn't mind if Santino won. I appreciate his quirky, much-too-much design. Going overboard and being kitchy is an artform in itself.

Santino is all about being wildly creative but he doesn't seem to understand or care if a woman would look good in his outfits. Sasha would have looked silly in his skating costume and she certainly would NOT have been able to perform a routine in it. While Daniel's designs are quasi-classical he's showing huge talent for his age and experience. Chloe's has a good sense of proportion & her clothes are user friendly, but not terribly exciting. In terms of giving the prize to someone who could learn from the experience without losing their own "voice" - I'd have to go with Daniel.

IMHO the best designers are Andre (Where's Andre!?), Chloe, Nick, and Daniel. If Santino want to pile stuff on he should take up collage.

Awaiting Project Jay... at least he was funny, if a tad inappropriat at times. Plus, he had a soul.

The other day a friend of mine said I should go on this show, Project Runway. My reaction: you are crazy sister!! Just because I've sewn a dress from umbrellas and other recycled projects... a) I don't think I sew well enough b) I fear making an ass of myself on national television and c) I don't want snarky PR watching bloggers trashing me ;) ... $100,000 would be nice however.

Santino is talented, but kind of an ass. He needs to get over it. While I am mildly obsessed with the apparel arts, there is more to life. I don't think I'd actually want to wear his clothes. As "zen" as it sounds, I don't like his energy and wouldn't want to carry it with me. Chloe is talented also and appears balanced. After the lingerie challenge, when she was crying b/c her team leader got cut, when he asked why she was crying... her response,"B/c you are such a nice person and that is much more important than being the greatest designer." Or something like that. She is also right. It is a tough business. Looooong hours. After taking classes at Parson's and FIT, I commend anyone who can put together a garment and appreciate my clothing like never before. My patternmaking teacher pushed us over the edge... 24 hours + 20 pattern pieces = one sleeve. True, there are technical designers, pattern makers, sewers, etc., but a good designer will know their sh*t.

My question is... can creativity be taught?

If you can't get enough of Project Runway, check out the recaps on TV Without Pity, a surprisingly non-snarky but fun, incisive, play by play. Good fun.

Now that Tim Gunn is just too dreamy. What a perfect, splendid man, so elegant, handsome, such panache, what a positive TV presence; i wish he had a talk show, but i could listen to him read the phone book. Anyone who gets to cross paths with him, you are so lucky. I heart Tim Gunn!!

As far as Santino goes, i agree with Vajra and Ange in that attitude does not equal talent. His impersonation of Tim is excellent and while i might want to hang out with him at a club, he is a pain in the ass and his 'special flare' is all about a craft glue gun and over designing with sequins, feathers and fringe. his clothes do not fit nor do they seem to be designed with the female figure in mind. go check out his final collection if you need to see proof of this. what the hell was he thinking? the attitude gives designers a bad name.

Chloe remains my favorite as a designer who consistently builds an elegant form in a totally wearable and well made execution. she should be the hands down winner because while other designers might get a lot of press for 'stepping out of the realm" or 'really putting your self into a project'- or whatever buzz you can come up with, it is Chloe's line that is compelling to wear. The lines on most of her garments are just beautiful. Her choice of fabrics, colors are exceptional and all the garments in her final line hang together as a collection- the exact collection she described for the last project (her final grey satin dress). it is bringing all these elements together,to me, the reason designers exist.

Daniel is great and is going to be a great designer. Nick was robbed and should have been in the final four.

it does seem like absolute hell to be on that show.

and to fiftyRX3, yes, creativity can be taught. and strengthened and released and broadened etc...

and design sponge lady- you have an excellent site and i love reading your commentary. you rule.

If anyone still thinks that Daniel is going to win then you must look toward the JCPenny sale page in Sunday's paper for the hottest new fashions! What I saw on last nights episode was a little bit StarWars and a little bit discount department store.

Satino's on the other hand was GORGIOUS! He really is a designer! Mean or not he is truly talented.

How did Kara get a collection if she was eliminated? I was impressed that she took her elimination criticism to heart ("Did you make the outfit you're wearing? Why can't you put THAT into your work?") and put out a good collection - I just don't understand how she was able to do said collection (though I haven't finished watching Finale Pt 1).

There is a misconception here that the winner of Project Runway will receive an internship with Banana Republic. In actuality, it's a "mentorship with the Banana Republic design team". Therefore, any of the three finalists might be willing to accept/appreciate what would amount to no more than their advice, direction and guidance.
