d*s yuck or yay: the luau lamp
i'm torn on this new portable lamp from vessel. luau ($249, coming soon) "turns bright tabletop lighting into a robust, portable, tactile product that is equally useful indoors and out" it can be lit while charging, and a slight rotation of the entire lantern controls the illumination. i like the idea (as i like most of their designs), but am not quite sold on the blobbyness of it. what do you think?

I'm not terribly bothered by the shape. It definitely could have been more elegantly sculptural and less blob-like, but it's basically OK. What turns me off immediatley is the price - way too high. Whereas the similar Candela lights are reasonable, $250 for this thing convinces me that I don't need it.
I'd say the success of this product (price aside) depends largely on whether or not one can drop it, get it wet, and generally put it through hell. After all a portable, versatile lantern needs to be durable otherwise it's form without function and even in the land of high design a little function is nice to have...
It reminds me of the rubber ball with the handle that you would then sit on and bounce around the house. Thinking of the light in that sense, I like it because it reminds me of a plesant memory. Take away that memory and it is one ugly light.
I actually like the concept, although I think the size might be a little exagerated (as well as the price perhaps...) I could see it being smaller, so you could lit up the tables. But maybe that was not what the designer had in mind.
Sorry guys, I need something like this. I have a terrace and have been looking for outdoor lighting. It's a bit expensive, but I've seen less interesting options for more. It's portable and if there's a storm I can just bring it inside and enjoy it there.
It is really expensive - and I would therefore never buy it - but there is something soothng about its blobby-egg shape. It is tranquil.
I agree with the question on the size. I feel like it should either be bigger or smaller.
If it were bigger, and if $ was no option, I could see a BUNCH of them all over the lawn. I can see my toddler running through them, catching fireflies while we sit on the patio sipping wine.
GOD , I LOVE THAT, THIS WOULD BE GREAT FOR OUR GARDEN, HAVING SOME DRINKS WITH FRIENDS AND THAT AS THE ONLY LIGHTING
I WISH I HAD $250 TO SPEND ON A LAMP!
It's quite expensive, but I like it.
I prefer the Coleman lantern look ;)
total blob
i actually like the blob; the price tag on the other hand...errr....
It's ugly
