sam johnson

Dowel1s

i'm feeling a real need to simplify the furniture and the accessories in my home- streamlined pieces with real attention to form and quality of material are becoming increasingly important to me. pieces like sam johnson's dowel lights are exactly what i'm looking for. johnson's work is clean, modern and wonderfully pared down to the most basic elements. you can see more of johnson's work right here and contact him for a retailer near you. enjoy! [i'm off to finish some hg work for tomorrow, so i'll be back with more fun finds tomorrow. don't forget to watch the top chef reunion tonight- i'm rooting for stephen fight that crazy irish guy]

I agree with anonymous, especially in the top left picture. The shade looks like one of those extra large Scott toilet paper rolls like you see in public restrooms but turned on its side. The base looks like the cardboard core of a paper towel roll with legs. I've seen much more attractive simple pieces - if simple is what you are looking for.

i don't know. really doesn't bother me. i see what you're saying but when i look i'm drawn to the base, not the shade so much. doesn't really scream "toilet paper" to me. though i'd love to hear what sam has to say about that. maybe i'll email him and see if he'd like to respond :)

What the heck are you guys talking about... toilet paper rolls? Grace, that lamp is beautiful. I love it... Now, let's dish about the TOP CHEF reunion... Steve redeemed himself (even though he's still a big windbag) by appearing humble and apologizing to what's her name... why can't I remember her name... the airhead chick who wore WAY too much makeup and overstyled her hair for the reunion show.) Tiffani... oy! that gal has some psychological problems. Harold is a snoozefest (and was it me, or was there a bit of awkward tension between him and Leanne when Gail asked if he was single? I'll start the rumor... I think there was something going on between those two.) And finally, I'm now rooting for Dave ("I ain't your bitch, BITCH!") to win the whole thing because he's the most hilarious on camera... cause let's be honest, if this REALLY were only about cooking then it wouldn't be in front of a camera.

I don't have a problem with the shade resembling a toilet paper roll (although it kind of does). I would be more concerned about keeping the top of the shade clean. With the design of most lamp shades, the dust falls through. With this shade the dust is just going to sit on the top of the shade. Obviously, you can clean it, but that isn't the problem. The problem is that if it is a nice silk or linen shade, that each time you have to clean it you run the risk of ruining the shade sooner. I try to keep my hands off of my silk shades as much as possible. One really nice lamp that I have actually came with white gloves to wear when you clean it. I know that sounds a bit over the top but just wait until you have to replace the shade because of smudges or natural oils from your fingertips and see how expensive it is.
