project runway

pr

i just watched pr this morning because we went to revenge of the bookeaters last night [david byrne is amazing!]. i thought the idea was fantastic but i was pretty much bored by the entire thing. i would have loved to have seen alison design for someone. clearly jeffrey has an attitude problem, but i really wish his mom would have straightened him up some. oh well. i'll have to say, vincent's dress wasn't bad. but i don't know. the season lacks heart and real edge to me. i look forward to seeing where michael goes and what uli does. we'll see. so, discuss. do we hate vincent or love him now? should jeffrey still be there? can we rally to get alison back?

I seriously wanted to barf when Vincent won. He shouldn't even be there in the first place. He should have gone 3 episodes ago.

Go Michael!

Oh yay! PR talk!

Ok so I miss Alison so much. How cute would her mom would have been?

I think Angela should be gone. Her outfit for Laura's mom was shamefully bad. And man 6 kids??

Ok this is one of my favorite things to talk about on here. I love design but I love Project Runway talk.

I have a friend who works at Bravo who says that Tim Gunn complained about the way the show was going and that the show sort of changes mid-season and gets better...Hmm....

I think it was brilliant to bring in their own mothers/sisters for real women. It kept the designers in check and the snarky comments and excuses about weight to a minimum. The fact is, a designer should be able to work for any type of client. Would they turn down Oprah, pre-weight loss or even now, because she isn't model-thin? Probably not. While I like Michael, I thought he took the easy route out - selecting the thinnest and youngest "real woman". Given that he had immunity, he could have taken it as a personal challenge. I have to admit, Vincent's dress was great and he really took the mom's personal style into consideration. Maybe that's the trick- speak different languages. Uli's was great - of course. The rest were very mediocre. Jeffrey is an ass and clearly hides behind "I'm just being honest" as an excuse. Must be some post-addict thing- honesty above everything. It's true, I think the show is missing an emotional element this season. Grace, thanks for giving us a place to rant!

I agree. I thought Michael took the easy way out but I loved his design. I don't think he slacked that much.

Uli is warming to me. She's just so far from my personal style that I have a hard time warming to the pattern thing. I have a natural fear of paisley and too much pattern...

Uli won my admiration last night, too. I think she should have won because she managed to make a lovely garment in her style that looked great on her full-figured model. Jeffrey's "dress" was a joke. And I don't care how much he can't stand Angela, he didn't have to make her mom cry.

Jeffrey is an ASS. Anyone who's that rude to someone's mom should be kicked off. If that was a client he'd be screwed. I hope he becomes famous and a plus size client wants something edgey from him (Cameron Manheim?) and he pisses them off and they spread the word that he's an ASS.

And I hated how his mom tried to defend him. Gross.

I was just complaining to a friend recently that I wish they would make the designers design clothes for "real women," so this was great (although there is that one "huge" model!). I wished they had found all larger women, though. I think the designers that had the thinner women had it a lot easier. And I was very very sad that all of the thinner women were picked first. Jeffrey shouldn't be allowed to treat a client like that, no matter who she is. Would he have spoken to Oprah like that? I think not. He won't go far if that's how he treats people. Thanks for letting us vent!

I agree. Could Jeffrey be more of a JERK. Seriously, capital J Jerk.

If he made my mom cry I would lose it.

Jeffrey came off looking like a garden-variety awful human being. He wasn't being honest, he was being defensive and bitter, and I can't believe he actually claimed that Angela's mom was "setting him up"! Still acting like a slippery, excuse-making junkie, even if he's on the wagon now. His...garment, if we can call it that, looked like a bad Friar Tuck costume for a provincial school play. It was barely even an article of clothing. It was obvious from what he made that he had no respect for his model, and that he'd utterly lost his ability to create when faced with someone from the "real world". The way he treated her was despicable, but very telling: he has no future outside of his LA bubble. And then his "slip-up" in the q&a period, saying that she worked for the Salvation Army, when she really works for the Red Cross? There's a vast difference between the two, pal - one saves lives, the other saves old clothes. He made something that looked like a deliberate insult. He should have been out. Robert's outfit was boring but it was what his "client" wanted. Jeffrey's was vile in every way.

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but Vincent came across as wise and calm. His outfit was OK. It shouldn't have won - Uli's should have.

I don't get the Angela hate. Her personality seems completely fine, given what they choose to show. Her design sense is ehh, but she seems like a perfectly OK person. What's the beef so many people have with her?

OK, back to the real world of pleasing my own clients...

Hey! Can I plug for just one second and say that I totally guessed there would be moms involved this week? Ok, now onto the real deal...I wanted to deck Jeffrey right in his tattooed neck. He called her mom a "B"! No excuse ever. Michael is just too cute and really puts thought into his designs. Roberts red/black mumu was upchuck worthy. I've stopped blogging about this season becasue it's a yawn and I'm just looking forward to when it boils down to actually talented and creative people; but I do love the rip roaring comments here :)

Does anyone else wish they gave them two days instead of one? It would have been great to give them extra time to make pants and jackets. Maybe we would have seen fewer sack dresses that way. If I had had a larger model like Vincent's sister I would have loved to make a classy pants and jacket combo to give her some structure and shape, but I don't know if there's time for that in one day...?

i'm with jeff... no way would he have called my mother a b**** and got away with it... i would have been kicked off for kicking his butt...

i loved michael's outfit and uli's outfit... i thought that has been my favorite designer from day one with michael second...

that's funny that you guys think that they purposefully picked the women based on their size... i just didn't get that... i felt like they were picking a mother of someone that they liked or admired... hence why angela's mom was last... she is not well respected... maybe i am being naive

i have two kids and am crazy most days... i can NOT imagine having FIVE!!!!! with one on the way... and i felt sorry for her husband finding out on the show about baby number 6!

i was SO GLAD TO SEE ROBERT GO!!!!!! he was sliding by each week with his mediocrity...

yeah tim gunn... that man has integrity.

I loved Tim Gunn's take on Vincent's dress. He just seriously does not like him and his form of crazy.

Vincent wins (note absence of exclamation point). Let’s begin with his model, Heidi (Uli’s mom). She could be a model; Heidi’s tall, gorgeous, and has a great figure. So Vincent was not even remotely challenged by the prospect of working with a new size, shape, or set of proportions. Therefore, his only challenge was design … and what was that? From my point of view, he made a simple sheath and adorned it with an oversized pilgrim-collar, and a collar that merely stood out on the front of the dress and didn’t even exist on the back. Huh? I didn’t get it and it certainly wasn’t my taste. But it suited the judges’ taste and that’s what matters. Congratulations Vincent, whatever you are.

I hate Jeffery. He is just mean and there is no excuse for that. I think he just walks around with a giant chip on his shoulder and takes it out on everyone! I loved Robert, but his designs were a snore. I thought Vincents dress was not all that well fitted, the collar was too huge. I think Uli is fabulous. I adore Kayne, but not always his designs. I just think he is funny and a kick.

I don't mind Angela, either. She got a terrible start with the crap from Vincent int hat team thing, but I think he was awful to her.

I wonder if Laura grows boobs when she is pregnant? Then she will have to give up those wide, deep necklines that only boobless women can wear.

I appreciate being able to come here and read about and discuss PR. No one I know watches it, so thanks a bunch.

I'm so late in the game here, but I just finished watching last night's episode. I think I'm the only one who was actually happy for Vincent. He obviously has issues, but I get the feeling he really needs to feel some kind of success again. That said, does anyone know what happened to him in the 80s to make him lose his business?

Also, Angela should've kicked Jeffrey's butt. What a jerk, making her mom cry. She probably went there thinking it'd be so much fun, and he totally ruined it for her. His outfit was all spite. Grr!

Thanks for this discussion, by the way. I really needed to get that off my chest!

I tiraded for a full five minutes to my roommate about how I would have mopped the floor with Jeffrey Weirdneck if he ever made my mom cry. The dress he made for her was like a self-sewn 4th grade home-ec project in Cher's basment.

I thought Uli's design finally showed just what she can do and from watching her mom deal with faux-crazy Vincent I can see where she gets her sweet smile and patience. If I didn't speak much English and some crazy burnout started flailing at me I would throw my wallet at him and run. The dress he made certainly wasn't anything special. And with an attractive older woman like Uli's mom he still couldn't make a flattering garment? C'mon. Stop trying to grab the much much older demographic and just let him go already, producers.

Michael played it a little safe and I can't blame him, because he had immunity and he's not the kind of guy who would drown the competition just to win three times. His dress was still amazing and I don't really know what the judges were talking about with the belt. AND IT WAS REVERSIBLE! I love that guy. If he's still in Atlanta I'll drive down there and shake his hand, buy him a beer. It's only an hour, Michael, see you soon.

I add my vote in for Alison to come back. Now. And tell Jeffrey that she isn't really his friend. Make him cry for once.

Basically my comment was -- Jeffrey & Angela's mom both should have gotten booted off.

Jeffrey was a jerk. Also, his dress was horrible. Looked like a 70's McDonalds uniform going to a halloween ball.

As a Red Cross worker, I would have expected Angela's mom could have handled the disagreement with Jeffrey better. At the first sign of discord, she should have just told Jeffrey to do what he thought was best. She was being stubborn and so she got offended -- Since when is light blue matronly? Thought the periwinkle looked good on her.

I too think they should have given the designers more time. Most were not familiar at all with designing for larger women.

I also think the producers/judges gave Jeffrey a pass cause they didnt want to upset Angela's mom more -- ie, make her feel responsible for him losing.

It was a good idea for a theme, but it got botched.

Jeffrey's time will come...I hope it'll come down to Uli and Michael. I love what she does - mixing patterns and the result is often gorgeous.

I'm liking this series.

I'm waiting for the Heidi to mention her jewellery line at some point. She wears the stuff every single episode. "Designers! I'm a designer too!"
