project runway: the reunion show

pr

well, there's a lot to say about tonight's reunion show but i'll let you guys hash it out below. for me the most memorable moments were vincent's freak out (over shirts. yeah, he's stable) and the preview for next week (will laura go too far with her accusation). what i kept thinking was- is nina garcia pregnant? did anyone else think she looked a little well, healthier? ok, feel free to dish below. poor kayne, his style just wasn't made for PR.

Vincent is unstable. A trainwreck. Although I'm glad Michael won fan favorite, I'm surprised Allison didn't win. I've always loved Michael.

Grace, I thought the exact same thing. Not only did she seem bustier, but the way her dress fit made me think Nina is pregnant. hmmmmmmm.

I'm so happy Keith got kicked off the show, because I think he is honestly disconnected from reality and responsibility. I cannot stand people who cannot fess up to their own mistakes. Hello! He should have read the contract in full before signing it. Also, I was surprised and bummed that Allison didn't win the $10,000 prize. I was rooting for her.

Also, I agree with Nina Garcia looking a lot healthier. She seemed like she had a softer aura to her, but it could have just been the dress.

So the producers confiscated Keith's books in the beginning and then planted them back in his room. Why didnt Keith say this when he was "caught"? Kind of surprised he didnt walk out in the middle of the "trial".

I thought Laura had good insight on Angela'a mom.

Oh man is Vincent a LOONEY.

I think he should have been kicked off for the laundry stunt he pulled. What a nutjob.

vincent is a tad insane and unstable--let's remember that he cashed in his 401k to come do the challenge. and what the f**; he talked about having a wife? he has a wife? i'm not even going to go there.

the whole thing with the planted books was insane.

i loved malan more than i thought i ever could.

as for nina, i think she's a little bit old for having kids. gotta be mid-40s, which doesn't make it easy, although not impossible. (laura's 42, but she's obviously VERY fertile.)

i still think jeffrey is an ass, and laura is still my fave.

I thought the exchange between Heidi, Tim and Keith was amazing. That was no-nonsense, I loved it.

Though was anyone else totally distracted by Kayne's spray tan? :)

Malan stole the reunion show for me. Was he not the most adorable thing ever? I wish he had been on the show longer, not just for his personality but I think he was an underrated talent. I'm so pleased that he had his own showing at Fashion Week.
I don't know whether or not Nina is pregnant, but she looked the most healthy, calm and happy we've ever seen her. Good for her. Laura was absolutely radiant.
Kudos to Angela for reigning it in. I'm sure it would have been very easy to snap and tell Jeffrey exactly what she thought of him, but she maintained her composure and was civil. Everybody knows Jeffrey is a self-absorbed jerk, pointing it out yet again during the reunion show wouldn't have proved anything.
I found the whole segment with Keith to be extremely uncomfortable. Did anybody else feel awkward just watching it? I can't believe he had the gall to say he was set up. The bottom line is that he broke the rules and just doesn't want to own up to it. Yuck.
I hope the producers bought Vincent a new shirt after they laundered his. Not because I think they owe it to him, but because I fear he might stalk them if they don't. Scary.
Michael continues to be humble and gracious and I'm thrilled that other fans chose him as their favorite.
All in all, an entertaining reunion show, even with a couple of moments of serious ugly.

Oh I loved the awkwardness shared with everyone between Angela and Jeffrey... I found myself thinking, through this season, that to get so outrageously mad at someone connotes some form of passion toward them... HHMMMM...

I continue to be suprised at the idea that Angela was really difficult. She got that rep after the Vincent team challenge, but I thought he was awful to her, but she got the bum rap. I refer to the call in vote about who the biggest drama queen was. I think she was out of her league, but I didn't find her at all as obnoxious as a lot of the others.

I also really like Milan, and am glad he came out of it well. He is such an odd duck, I am glad he can shine in design, because you just know he was tortured by other kids.

I wanted Allison to win the fan favorites too, since I think Michael could with the whole shebang.

Vincent is really scary, and any woman who acted like him wouldn't be tolerated.

I have not seen or heard anyone say this so I thought that I might just put it given that the bulk of the show is almost over. I think uli is an instigator and has a knack for picking up and on people's flaws. In every episode during this season, she has been the silent predator. She is always picking on peoples shortcomings, always, check it out, on every episode where there is an interaction with her that is what she does. I HATE people like that. Don't get me wrong, I love her clothing, but it's her personality that irks me to no end. Am I the only one who sees this?

was anyone else surprised that alison was friends with jeffrey and keith? she seemed a little, i don't know, something during the taping. i think the sweet vibe seemed different. i ended up not liking her as much, even though she didn't really say that much. and her exit interview where she goes on and on about how great jeffrey is made me a little icked out. i think jeffrey often has an interesting point of view but his inability to admit his mistakes or be a polite human being irks me. yes, angela's mom was a little difficult, NO it is not ok to still not apologize to her. i mean, you made someone's mom cry- suck it up and say you're sorry.

malan is a, less dark, harold, from 'harold and maude'

interesting that michael has braces now. he must have come into some money recently. hmmmm.

also, allison seemed let down as i think she assumed that she would get 'viewer favorite'

megan, Harold & Maude is one of my favorite movies ever. Malan does have some of these sweet-but-odd characteristics that Harold also had. About Michael's braces, they don't necessarily mean he "came into some money". I only say that because I don't have a lot of money and I recently got braces (I'm 28). I had to get them to correct my bite and they were pricey but I financed them at only $200/month. I know that's way off topic, just had to put it out there.
D*S, I sensed something "off" about Allison too. I can't quite put my finger on what it was. Maybe it was a combination of things. Maybe a tad self-righteous or at least an air of "I know I should have been here longer" plus a bit of "I'm above all of this". That combined with her affinity for some of the squicky personalitiy people (Keith and Jeffrey) made me second guess my initial perception of her. The whole vibe made me like her less, even though the competition is about design and not personalities something about her did not sit right with me last night. Her outfit was cute though.
Jeffrey, it's never too late to apologize. Geez, even if he doesn't mean it he could have said he was sorry last night, either to Angela or even facing the camera. A simple "Angela, I'm sorry that I treated your mother that way" would have made Angela and her mom feel better, not to mention a lot of PR fans. He doesn't have to apologize about his design decisions, just his behavior. I disagree with Angela's mom's behavior in the episode too, but she isn't the one trying to launch a somewhat public career. Apparently the only PR Jeffrey has heard of is Project Runway - he needs to learn more about Public Relations!

I agree with anonymous and D*S about Allison. She just seemed a little less cute although I really loved her hair! I think that it is strange that she seems to have such a high opinion of Keith - he's so slimy.

I really loved Milan. I wish that Vincent had been auf'd instead him, it would have been neat to see some more of his stuff!

Tim Gunn is awesome and so is Design Sponge! Congrats on the new D*S shop!

I commute on a ferry into Seattle everyday. Everyone was feeling the strange vibe Allison was putting out. She seems so loyal to Keith?? Whom EVERYONE felt, if your friends were able to get passed the cheating the conspiracy theory might be a little too much to overlook.

We're all so concerned with Angela's Mom - come on - Angela is the way she is because her Mom is an instigator. Never mind Jeffrey, I think that it's unforgivable for Vincent and Keith to be so
hostile towards Tim Gunn, if any one deserves an apology it's Tim!

I agree with people about Alison. I really think her choice of favorite guys from the show is questionable. She and Keith kept touching eachother and giving eachother weird looks. The man is very off and creepy. I found it odd that Heidi knows so little about Tim Gunn though. She didn't know he was artistic! The parts about Tim were my favorite.

Oh totally, how could Vincent and Keith be so rude to Tim?? Tim's criticism is always constructive, never rude. Sometimes MK's is rude, but it's so funny I just have to laugh. Tim is a gentleman and a sweetheart though.

I don't care so much about this who is and isn't a jerk. Who cares? I really do not care at all. In any event, Jeffery is just a bit childish and wounded, and lacking in some basic social graces - but I don't think he is any more of a true ass*#!@ than any of the others. Laura's said some fairly bitchy things under her breath, and no one calls her on it because she's a bit more subtle. Michael won because he is def the least bitchy designer on the show. He's very nice. His clothes are OK. The quality of his clothes balance out with his "nice" factor, and people think he's the best. Give me a break. He makes wearable clothes, ready for Jessica Simpson in a video. I feel as though Alison was the third best designer, after a tie between Jeffery and Keith (yes he was a big baby for not acknowledging his behavior, and I do think he should have been kicked off), and it would have been nice if she had won the fan favorite.

I think it's interesting that in America we want our stars to be "nice." We reward the people who are nice and slightly talented, raising them up as the greatest talents. I guess thats why a mediocre actress like Julia Roberts is an oscar winner and the most beloved movie star.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if the greatest novelists and painters of the early 20th century had been on a reality show contest? Picasso would be painting across from Norman Rockwell, both working on the latest challenge. Picasso is drunk and obnoxiously flirting with a young PA who's standing off camera. Norman Rockwell whistles as he paints, "How you doing today Picasso?" Picasso furrows his brow and is all, "You are fucking absurd." Off in the dimly lit theater, the audience crinkles with distaste. A young woman turns to her boyfriend and says "He's so rude, and he doesn't even know how to draw."

Laura was my favorite: "No, I don't own jeans. I wear riding pants and boots when I have errands to run in town."

I thought the piece on Tim Gunn's vocabulary was a sad commentary on all those contestants: except for Laura, they're all essentially trashy, unexposed to anything. The most culture they get is from reading InStyle magazine or watching Will & Grace reruns.

What educated person doesn't know what ambivalent means, or to mitigate, or consternation?

These aren't technical terms.

Laura called Vincent delusional, but I believe that can be applied to Jeffrey as well. Of course, we may have to explain to him what it means.

I agree that Alison liking Keith so much made me think twice about her . . . I think Keith came off as just an awful person on the show, but (get ready for a very weak connection) my hair dresser has a friend whose best friend is good friends with Keith, and apparently says that he's actually a really nice guy in person but agreed that he totally came off as an ass on the show. So who knows. Maybe he's one of those people who is great if he likes you and awful if he doesn't. I don't like those people, but they exist.

I, too, thought it was odd that Heidi didn't know Tim enjoyed fine arts more so than designing clothes. She seemed so surprised. But then again, it's been rumored that she (like Tyra Banks on ANTM) is stand-offish off camera, and doesn't really interact with anyone except during filming. I was also surprised Tim wasn't in on the "we're sending all four designers" thing...

I think this show, at least this season, is not about who is the best but who is the nicest.

Let's face facts... none of them know the first thing about being a designer period.

10:06 AM

i disagree anon. i think many of them know a lot about being a designer. they certainly don't have the full package but considering many of them are working designers with jobs and existing collections i think they probably know a thing or two about designing...

Interesting point but the rules themselves prohibit being a good designer. No resource materials, c'mon that's aweful.

Being a designer is not about havign a look and doing that look over and over again. being a designer is about aproaching each challenge with a different and apropriate outlook and take.

That goes for all design. because if you just do the same thign you might as well be a grafitti artist.

1:17 PM
Blogger design*sponge said...

I don't think it's "aweful" at all. In my opinion they aren't doing that "look" over and over, but several of them have a very distinct style. But so do the most popular professional designers. I don't think there's been a Donna Karan dress I've ever seen that I didn't immediately say "That's Donna Karan". I think continuity can be good. To each his own...

I don't think the show prohibits you from being a designer. Can you explain that? Being a designer doesn't mean you HAVE to have resource materials. I really doubt that Calvin Klein is, by definition, a designer because he can use source materials...

It seems like you might just be unhappy with the quality of work and designers, but I'd love to hear more about how the show itself restricts them from being called designers...that's a new one.

no one has said anything about Robert—who despite the boring rep he got on the show— had the most hilarious comments during his interviews as well as when he and Kayne would get bitchy. In the mix of all of the drama, it was nice to have someone there to roll his eyes a bit.

Was not a Vincent fan from the beginning, he is too much of a geek and jerk and I can't believe he lasted as long as he did. I'm with the person up there who said he should have been kicked off for his freak out on the laundry scene. I actually thought Allison was alright before, innovative designs and all but she turned out to be snobby so I'm glad she got voted off as well. My money's been on Michael from the start. He is very talented and it pays to not disrespect others and to focus on what's in front of you.

I thought PR season 1 was the best. The reunion for PR season 3 was over the top, everyone was negative - including Heidi Klum. Tim Gunn's pretty cool though.

Ralph...you up there who wrote the loooong message. You make no sense - talking about not being interested with who is and isn't a jerk. Right after that comment you talk crap about people, not just from the show but all across America. Maybe you are not in college anymore or maybe you never went to college, but obviously you haven't moved on from the typical college boy talk, acting bigger and better than the rest. It's so dull - grow up dude.

I thought the last post was a bit of a personal attack. I see Ralph's point. Clearly we would like to see likeable characters that we can relate to. I personally enjoyed watching Micheal week after week as he could keep his composure in such a stressful competition. We saw a lot of acting, over-acting due to stress, personality differences or for drama ske. Sometimes it was hard to watch and seeing the nicer characters was refreshing.

Of course, nice people are not always the most talented. I do not know if I saw anything that really was amazing this season. But, couple of other designers had their moments. I thought Alison had the most interesting point of view, but chaqu'un a son gout as Tim says. I am sure there are plenty of unsavory personalities in the design world and that it is not a big predictor of success.

VINCENT- I think the producers kept him in for ratings because they knew from the start that even though he was probably the weakest out of all, his behavior would be good for ratings.

ALLISON - Yep, she showed her true color during the reunion and her alliance with Keith and Jeffrey does bring up questions about her character. Basically I think she's very snooty though sweet in the beginning.

ANGELA - I don't think she's as big of a mess as we've been lead to believe. The editing of a couple of early shows gave her an unfair portrayal.

JEFFERY - He's a very immature, snobby insensitive prick and he looks like Squiggy from Lavern and Shirley with tats.

LAURA - I have mixed feelings about her, she seems sweet and the most mature out of all of them but then she makes odd comments at times too that you wouldn't expect. Her designs though need to have more range.

ULI - Her designs need more range too and I don't think she'll end up being the winner.

KEITH - He obviously is a very bitter person, judging from the reunion show. I agree that if you're going to accuse the producers of some wrong doing, you should have done it when they first kicked you out of the show, not months later. I think he fabricated that to save his reputation.

MALAN - I do wish he had stayed in the competition longer, because he's proven to be a very likable and humble guy and what he said in the renion show was very touching!

MICHALE - I'm so glad he won the fan favorite competition. He's probably the most talented of all this season and I don't want to say that I want him to win it all because I still haven't seen the final collection from all 4 but if I had to go with what he's designed so far, my money is on him. Also the most drama-free, likable, gracious and humble guy in the competition, but really not that hard to be all that when you're up against characters like Vincent and Jeffrey.

Regarding Vincent - Isn't anyone else creeped out by the "That turns me on"... comments? I find it almost perverted, or at least just very, very weird.
