top design

well, i think it's "see you later decorator" time for me and top design. after last night's episode (socks and strappy heels kelly? really?) i think i'm officially done with the show. it just misses the mark for me and after three strikes, well, you know the rest. feel free to share any last thoughts below. if you still need top design dishing i think most other design sites are on the case...

[psst: having a little issue with with .net hosting my logo, should be fixed soon. we're on it]

I couldn't agree with you more. It is the second week that I fell asleep on it. I wasn't the biggest fan of Design Star but this is a total monstrosity. I'd go HGTV over Bravo, Bravo missed the mark on this show.

I agree, its just awful and painful to watch. Sad really - and I don't think the designers are that great at all. What was up with the socks, hmm? Todd just sucks as a host, and the entire show is pretty sad.

Yea, the socks and the strappy heels sent me over the edge. My husband, who is not fashion savvy in the least said something about it before I did. I think Todd is doing a fine job. But I am wondering about the rest. :)

As Jonathan Adler might say it, "This show is a major bummer. I need a dose of Zoloft just to get through an episode."

I've been trying to like it.. but it always seems slightly off. The pacing is strange, Todd is awkward, and there's really nothing wrong with acid green. This is no runway.

I agree, the whole show just seemed to try too hard - I think producers were aiming to format the show after Project Runway. But they totally missed. Todd did not host effectively, and I was so put off by the judges and bad designers! I'm done too!

Not Sure why you think the show misses the mark other than your criticism of kelly's clothing. I think that it's a good show that has good characters. Mike is fun to watch. Carisa is overbearing...good stuff!

The designs might not be the best but they get "called" on it later by the judges which is entertaining as well. Nothing different than top chef or project runway.

I guess the if the designers were given more than 16 hours to design a cabana. or more than 20 minutes to decide a fabric and color they might make better more thoughtful choices. ( something you could agree about ). I doubt anybody reading this blog could do better under the same challenge restriants.

Chef is a good show but in the end you as an audience cannot smell or taste the food so you cannot make a judgement about it ( other than sight, which doesn't mean anything about how good it is.) You need to rely on the judges for their expertise. In top design you can make a lot of judgement calls on your own which is probably why you are disappointed. you think it could be better. I think if you tasted the food on chef you might be more critical.

Check out the really sad online pillow contest on their site... It makes the show look golden.

the show is totally painful, and all the designs just keep on being so blah. i realized last night watching it, that the genius of project runway, is somehow, even though the judges might be making a comment on a hem that is only a 1/8 of an inch too long, the make you BELIEVE that it is so important, and that fashion is changing the world! oh, also, they have some fun, too.

So you are going to stop watching because of shoes? Kinda how I feel about having Elizabeth kicked off for an accent color.

I love it! To see egotistical interior designers cut on one another's abilities. Then the judges turn around and smack them down. I am referring to the bickering between Crista and Ryan.

i think if i wasn't such a fan of Jonathan Adler's work, i would've stopped watching after the 1st show. the show is still awkward and the lacks the energy of shows like PR and Top Chef (even if I could taste through my TV). i feel like the show will probably hit its stride around the 5th episode and by then, a lot people will have stopped watching. (and yes, see ya later decorator is so cheesy!)

i actually would continue to watch the show just to see what kelly will wear next (and not because i need style tips). her hairstyle and wardrobe is so kooky and seems to get more insane with each episode. by the last episode, i'm betting that she'll be in a gold lame turban...

i really don't see what's so horrible about the show besides watching the designers struggle through the challenges. they had me at the first challenge. lighten up.

I don't think the show gives enough credit to the viewing audience. The criticism is vanilla and anything but constructive and/or truly critical. With a graduate degree in architecture, I have seen my fair share of juries and know that any one of these designers would have a a much tougher time defending their projects. The personalities are dry and the voices are monotone. It is painful, to say the least, to watch the show and gave up on it last week when the "pirate ship" won.

I have watched Project runway and why I it works is beacuse it only requires a runway to show the design. It is hard to get a sense of good interior design and architecture without the added benefit and challenge of working with natural light and a multitude of other spacial characteristics other than a three sided square and no ceiling. And Todd Oldham is no Tim Gunn. I am looking forward to the next season of PR.

Maybe they're not all bad designers, but the concept of 'good design' under tight time constraints misses this mark. Design is instinctual to those who excel--that said, the time constraints are unrealistic and thus make the designs uninteresting and half-baked. A real design/designer needs real time to come to fruition and the tv format simply doesn't allow for that--ultimately the winners are chosen for having created the design that is the best of the bad. Maybe the drama and characters are entertaining, but the design is, in my opinion, insulting.

Yes, although I LOVE both Top Chef and Project Runway, this show is the pits. The contestants are boring, lacking taste and abnoxious. The only exciting thing seems to be Kelly's outfits, which are a little over the top, even for Los Angeles standards. I hope that this show gets cancelled.

I'm in London and don't get to see this show - perhaps I'm fortunate judging by the comments - but it looks somewhat like an ad for Old Navy.

It's the pacing. The show's pacing is really off. You don't get to see them sketching or focusing on what they planned to do or why they did it. Just quick shots of bickering, then quick takes of the building and then voila! it's done and wtf! Besides the lifeless judges (haircrimping and scrunch leggings cannot inject life into KW's sad puffy eyes, nor their chemistry. They really need to focus more on the individual designers doing their things and maybe get Alice from Design Star to be the Host of this one. I can only distract myself with TO's teeth before I get bored. The impressive formulaic line-up of Bravo's tv hasn't impacted the editors or producers of TD.. They forgot their own formula of success! (And who else here thinks TO is a terrible designer! I wouldn' want to live in his home if they paid me...)

I think I'm done with this season's top design. It's clear that the show is looking for drama kings and queens, not talent...why else would carisa and michael still be there? See ya later, decorator...or maybe not
