top design

i'm off to interview margaret russell from top design for a piece to run on d*s tomorrow. while i haven't been blogging the show, i've been quietly tivo-ing and watching the series, hoping that it would improve with time. while i still feel that the best designer (goil) went home weeks ago, i've been unable to turn it off for good. so when bravo asked if i'd like to talk to margaret i thought it would be a great chance to ask some questions i've had since the series started (why can't they meet their clients?!). so, i'll be back tomorrow to run the full piece and then report from the series finale party on wed night. bravo is hosting a get together with the contestants, judges and hosts tomorrow night so i'm going to attend and take as many photos as possible. my goal is simple: meet goil. those pink glasses slay me...

While I appreciated Goil's intellectual and conceptual strengths--that never translated itself into valid design reality--

i've been watching the show by accident for the msot part (also hoping it would improve). i just couldn't get hooked on it or rally around any favorite designer--not even goil. but how exciting that you're interviewing margaret! i can't wait to read all about it.

it seems to me that the show has a whole lot of shopping and not enough design. some of these budgets are insane! 50grand?? really? my favorite episode was when they went to garage sales...it takes a whole lot more talent to design and be creative when you don't have a bunch of fancy furniture to choose from.
and waaaayyy too many team challenges--that seems to be entirely for the sake of drama on reality tv).
have fun! i really like Margaret’s blog on bravo! (i wish i liked any of the designers...sadly, goil was my favorite, too).

I agree with the other anonymous. I think Goil was charming and elfin, but I wasn't particularly impressed with his designs.

I'm jealous. I've met Margaret a few times here in SF for Dining by Design. I always enjoy hearing what she has to say.

Goil, strikes me as one of those designers who overthinks things until they are too conceptual.

I liked Andrea's work and Matt's. Both create well designed and comfortable rooms.

Unfortunately this show has been a big fizzle, I've been watching it more out of habit than inspiration. Between Kelly, Jonathan and Todd I've never seen a more akward and boring presentation. Thank goodness for Margaret and most of the guest judges. I hope they recast for next year.

It's unfortunate how awkward and stilted the host/judge-types are - I agree that this show is just hard to get addicted to.

Very interested in your interview, my position on the show is exactly the same as yours, tivo and goil. So, I'll be interested in what comes out. I'm also interested in some of the guests they had. I'd love some why. Also, how and why did Carissa make it so far????????

I look forward to your q&a.

Congrats on your blog and also great brooklyn tour on the new www.houseandgarden.com. Really great stuff.

Congrats Grace!

We are all goil fans, I think he was the most original and innovative designer. And I do like Clarissa, her rooms are graphic, modern and fun, her personality, not so much.

And personally, I think magaret is pretty narrow in her visioin of design. Don't really like her, I think Kelly has much more visioin and an open mind.

"Goil, strikes me as one of those designers who overthinks things until they are too conceptual." I totally agree with this comment. I only watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of Top Design and couldn't be bothered with it past that point. It was such a poorly executed show that didn't live up to its potential. I know a lot of people were disappointed after initially being excited about this program.
I'm surprised at all the Goil love. He was often very timid, unassertive and didn't work well in groups. His designs were sterile more than minimalist.

I have to throw my 2 cents in. Goil was one of my housemates in college and I don't think these challenges showed off his design skills at all. He was the most talented designer in his class. I think he was out of his element being stuck with a rectangular room. His architectural designs are usually quite sculptural and sexy.

Also I have to say that his fun and endearing personality was not shown as much as I would have liked.

i tivo it all the time! i love goil! he is so inventive. i love his ideas, he is too too nice, and that is why he isn't on the show anymore. if he was more assertive i think he would be in the top two. awesome interview with margaret btw! :)
