15 questions with: todd oldham

i really enjoyed opening up the jay jeffers podcast to reader questions so i've decided to expand on that notion with a series called "15 questions with...". i'll be inviting some of our favorite designers to take place and answers questions that you ask. once a designer is introduced the comment section will be open for you to leave questions. next week i'll be featuring designer todd oldham. todd hardly needs an introduction so instead i'll open the floor for questions you might have for him. he's done just about everything when it comes to design (product design, interiors, graphic design, photography, etc.) so feel free to ask away. i'll choose my favorite 15 questions and hand them to todd tomorrow with answers running next week. have fun!

What does he think is the next "big" trend in "handmade modern". Will indie design and DIY finally make it onto tv, or does he think it's destined to stay online or in books.

(And what did he think of working with Kelly Wearstler!?)

Hi Todd!

What is your favorite DIY project you've done over the years?

(And how did you get to meet and become friends with Amy Sedaris? LOVE her)

Katie :)

What was it that attracted you to Charley Harper's work so much? Over say, other artists working with nature, etc.?

I would love to know how Todd:

a) DECIDED to make the transition from fashion design to product/interior design (I was a huge fan as a teenager of his clothing, he was one of the people who inspired me to become a clothing designer)

and

b) HOW did he make the transition (ie. what helped him along)

Thanks Grace!

What does he think of the wave of indie design in the market. Sites like Etsy, shows like Renegade. Does he think that the current over-reliance on screenprinted t's and tote bags are bad for the handmade movement?

Hi Todd!

My question: How did you get into the hodgepodge of working with a variety of different mediums and materials?

And: What personally inspires you to create the work you do?

Thanks!

Hello Todd,

I would love to know who your favourite furniture designers of all time are and is there a particular movement in the history of furniture/interior design that you are particularly drawn to?

Also, what colour palette and style can be found in your own home?

Thank you!

Vanessa

Hi Todd,

Do you still have your treehouse? Can you tell us what went into that home, from the mundane (building permits) to the delightful decorating?

Todd, when you were in your 20's did you feel the need to accomplish? When, if ever, did you envision yourself where you are today?

I heard that Todd designed Amy Sedaris's apartment around her pet bunny. I am curious how he did that, I recently adopted a house bunny, how can i incorporate my bunny's living area into my living area (in a small amount of space) in a well designed way. Any tips?! Thanks!! -amy marie :)

How would you describe your person style? How has it evolved over the years? Has your success changed your tastes or your own home's style?

Can you tell us a bit about YOUR home? What are your favorite pieces in your home or what designers are featured in it? Are there color schemes you've used in your home that you love that you could share?

Are there things that you could tell us that people would be surprised to know. Like any secret tacky design obsessions or perhaps that your house is ALL WHITE?

Kate ;)
