eames + feathers

when we moved into our apt the previous tenant left behind a pretty ragged looking eames eiffel chair. it's got a little stamp of authenticity so i couldn't bear to throw it away but it needs to be reholstered or refinished- does anyone know how much it would cost to reupholster one of these guys? it's currently got black leather with the bikini-style stitching but it's filthy and ripped. i'm wondering if it's pricier than buying a new one. also, had to share this cute rug i got from urban outfitters for christmas. i'm loving teal and yellow these days so this little feather number is right up my alley. it's not the softest rug but it will do for the kitchen...available right here for $68.

Hi -
http://retroredo.com/ In Oklahoma, but these guys are incredible. Supposedly, there is a place in Long Island City that does MCM furniture restoration, but I heard they were very pricey.

I've looked at Urban's rugs before but have never purchased one. Has it been difficult to keep it clean using it in the kitchen? Does it stay in place easily (are you using one of those rubber no-slip mats underneath?)
As for the Eames Eiffel chair, unless you really, really love it I wouldn't bother reupholstering it. A shell chair or a larger or more rare piece, perhaps, but the Eiffel chairs with the bikini aren't that hard to find in better condition. Throw a pillow in it or sell it on Craigslist to a good home and use the money towards another treat for you or your home!

its not leather either, its naugahyde none of thier fiberglass chairs were made with leather. I would keep it no matter what if you get it reuphlostered. If not let me know! :)

H&M used this pattern for a lot of things in the fall (underwear, shirts, swimwear).

well, we have cats so our rugs tend to go a lot faster than most people's. to be honest we're pretty neat in the kitchen so i haven't had a problem with spills so much as the cats ripping it up.

the texture is a bit rubbery so i'm guessing that over time the color is going to start to fade and chip a bit. i sadly sort of expect that with things from urban outfitters so we'll see how it holds up. when i asked for it i though the color, etc was woven through but when i arrived it was clear that it was screenprinted- not my favorite.

so, i think it would be fine for a low traffic area but not something that would be mussed with a bunch.

Grace - i would contact your herman miller rep - i believe they have started making these chairs again, and you may be able to purchase a new authentic "bikini" from them. I know that they will reupholster their own chairs when the fabric gives out. It may be pricy, but it would be authentic!

I wish someone left a chair for me - all I ever got was a filthy apartment with an old christmas tree!

What's wrong witht this chair sporting a little age? It looks great in the photo. Not everything needs to be fixed up and slick.

Yawn. Why does somebody always have to bring up Urban and Santorum?
D*S, I think that comment comes up as much as the one about Design Within Reach (you know, the joke about the name Design Within Reach that isn't at all funny?)
Back on topic - sometimes Hume has replacement bikinis (click my name for the link)

ah ralph, you're back!

well, turk is covering it up but there's a big rip in the upholstery under his bottom. age is fine and the new rocker i bought is delightfully aged-looking but this one definitely needs some work. a holey seat just doesn't fly with guests.
