benedict calland

one of the things i loved about last year's icff was the was designers were integrating textiles into furniture and lighting. there's something about the hand-crafted feel and softness of textiles that really appeals to me. so i was pleasantly surprised to hear from designer (and recent northumbria graduate) benedict calland about his work. benedict produced two chairs that i'm really loving- the first being a piece called aerith. aerith is a beautiful combination of sleek, modern design and traditional materials like wooden toggle buttons and soft, woven textiles. i love the way the chair feels both old and familiar and new and clean at the same time. the soft textile upholstery reminds me of an old sweater while the chair has a nice modern feel that balances out the rest of the design. benedict also created a chair called tifa (seen below) with a curved cushion to encourage lounging. i love any seat that feels like it's welcoming you to lean against it. the yellow upholstery is lovely as well. you can browse the rest of benedict's work and contact him right here. enjoy!

before + after

i love a good before and after diy project. nothing is quite as satisfying as seeing what you can do with your own two hands. marie at justmariec made over this fantastic antique store find with a gorgeous amy butler fabric. it's amazing what a coat of white paint and a bit of new fabric can do. [thanks to marie for sharing and claire for the tip!]

bamboo fun

something about the bamboo chair post really struck a chord with people and i've been hearing nonstop about great diy projects people have done with used bamboo-style furniture. one of my favorites belonged to leah of more ways to waste time. leah found these metal bamboo-style chairs on ebay and had them powder coated in white. the result is clean, fresh and totally fantastic. click here to read more about leah's home decorating projects. [thanks, leah!]

kanibal home

kanibal home is a fantastic new online store comprised of one-of-a-kind, vintage objects. the site combines found art and furnishings collected by owner kelly greene. kanibal reupholsters furniture, salvages found artwork and jewelry and even offers to help you find pieces if you drop them a line. looks like they're off to a great start- i'm loving this peacock chair ($178) but you can click here to browse the full collection and shop online. (more) bamboo love

oh man, i'm in bamboo furniture heaven. thanks to you guys we finally found some dining room chairs for our house! they were a bit pricier than i'd hoped (even on sale) but thankfully i was able to get two of them as a belated birthday present from my parents (thank you!) and split the other two between ac and myself. they're chairs we'll have for a long time so i think they'll be worth the investment. i'm already imagining repainting and reupholstering them down the road when i need a change. and speaking of bamboo- this victoria bench at williams-sonoma home is seriously gorgeous. i'd love to paint it white and top it off with a bold vintage fabric. or maybe something with a bold yellow. either way, i'm definitely feeling bamboo right now.

bamboo chairs

despite a massive dining room chair search (which turned into a slideshow)ac and i still haven't found dining chairs. we did a big house cleaning this week and now our dining room is empty except for our table. i've found myself obsessing over these jonathan adler bamboo regency chairs but sadly the 500 bucks a pop price tag is way out of my price range. then i thought about calling an event rental company and buying the classic bamboo chiavari chairs that everyone has at their wedding, but they don't look that comfy, even with cushions- they seem a little narrow. but i'm willing to get some chairs that need to be fixed up and painted- but where oh where are my reasonable priced bamboo/regency styled chairs? i love the styles above and below but where is the middle ground? all i can find are $75 wedding chairs and $500-$1000 fancy versions. does anyone have a great resource or tips for finding bamboo regency style chairs- preferably with arms? [chairs above: jonathan adler ($495), 1stdibs.com and 1stdibs.com]

ebay

grey and yellow always look so nice together- especially in the case of this vintage chair on ebay. it's currently bidding at $125 and is located in brooklyn so if you're in the tri-state area this could be a great find. a little damage on the arm but nothing that couldn't be cleaned up.

craft project

when i get bored i like to do little craft projects around the house using leftover fabric or paper. one of my favorite things to do is use wrapping paper to line drawers, cabinets and closets. i thought my dresser drawers could use a little snazzing up to go with our new quilt so i picked up a few rolls of snow & graham gift wrap (on sale at loom) and cut them to size for my drawers. the best way to finish the project is to cut clear contact paper to size and use that to secure the gift wrap, but i decided to go for simple scotch tape this time because i didn't have any contact paper around the house. and if you get bored? simply peel off and start again- always a fun project for a hot afternoon.

desk extravaganza

last week ac and i ordered a new desk for our bedroom- i really need to stop working on a couch and he needs a place for his desktop. so i figured while i was looking for desks i would compile a list of some of my favorites on the market. it turned into 28 desk slideshow that i just posted. prices range from a target/ikea level to serious splurge status but since this audience spans that range i thought i'd include them all. ours falls in the budget range so if you're looking for a desk and would like some ideas just click here to see the full slide show. ours is the second desk in the slideshow...

eames sofa

how incredibly cute is this sofa? i'm loving this eames 2 seater sofa at dwr. not exactly the sort of sofa you nap on, but man is it pretty. and, if you're in the market for a sofa, stay tuned for next monday's roundup of great modern sofas. [there are some dining chairs here if you need those in the meantime]

ac and i have been searching for dining room chairs for a while now so i thought i'd compile a slideshow of some of my favorites. there are over 25 chairs to check out, ranging from affordable to splurge-worthy. some of my favorites fall right in the middle so i hope there will be something for everyone. so, if you're looking for some dining chair fun click here for the full slideshow. enjoy! [the yellow steel chairs in the first shot are my personal favorite]

papa chair

there are few things better than a vintage chair upholstered (or reupholstered) in a lipstick red fabric. make it a nubby red fabric (boucle perhaps?) and i'm in heaven. for me, a good red fabric is as classic as a little black dress or a good pair of flats. it never goes out of style. sadly these guys are out of my price range, but if one of you has the dough for a gorgeous chair, ebay's got a great hans wegner papa chair right here for you. [current bidding price: $1500]

arnaud lapierre

parisian designer arnaud lapierre sent over some pictures of his latest work: a side plate/key project called le contact and jirho, a beautiful hanging votive holder. le contact started from a hotel room project. one of the first things people do when they settle into their room is place their personal items (money, watch, glasses, keys) on the bedside table. arnaud designed this porcelain plate/tabletop to hold these items and a red transparent key that, when placed over the decoration on the plate, reveals a hidden city map printed on the plate. such a fun idea...

jirho is a joint project with ethnik.org, a group that promotes art and crafts from africa and madagascar. designed to be placed outdoors in a garden, the light shines through tiny holes in the outer layer, casting delicate shadows below. arnaud's site is still under construction but you can contact arnaud right here if you're interested in any of his projects.

urban

i was looking for some affordable basic lampshades at urban outfitters and came across these two pieces: a wood-grain 3d chandelier ($30) and a mirrored dressing table ($200). i've been toying with the idea of one of these chandeliers for a while now and this little wooden one is pretty cute. for $30 i might have to look into it...
