rock and roll

alright, i bit the bullet and bought my rocking chair from modhaus. i've been secretly pining for this chair since october and have finally saved up enough money to make it my own. it's a vintage 1950's kofod larsen rocker with a bent ply back, steel frame and cherry rockers. i'm going to upholster it in something bright and scandinavian. i'm thinking maybe a joseph frank pattern...anyway, just wanted to share. big smiles over here.

How do you tell that this is an original? Isn't the back stamped somewhere with "made in Denmark"?

Ooo, what a lovely rocker! I agree that it would look great with a Josef Frank pattern; something like Aralia would be gorgeous!

Where do you buy your Josef Frank fabrics? In the past I've ordered directly from Svensk Tenn, but it's kind of a pain since you can't order from their site. A Google search isn't yielding much for me...

Yup, you always get either a stamp or seal on originals like this. The last few pieces we bought from Modhaus had stamps as well as writing from the manufacturer on them. I always love when you get writing or little details like that to remind you of the people who first made and owned the piece.

As for upholstery I'm totally torn! I'm thinking this will be in our living room so it should probably stick within the brown, teal and cream family but this is probably a good place to have a nice bright color pop so I'm tempted to go for something with a bright chartreuse in it. I'm going to go to Mood next week and see what I can find ;)

Oh, and I usually find Joseph Frank fabrics at Just Scandinavian in NYC. I'm pretty sure that's the name...it's pricey but if you're only buying a teeny bit it's fun. I can't afford to buy big swatches of Frank fabric for my house.

Hi Grace, do you do your own upholstering or do you have a good source for someone? Also, do you have a good source for someone who makes curtains? Like you i'm always wanting to do custom projects with fabric i love.

Thanks and nice score!

Something with a smidge of bright yellow int he pattern would be great with your colour pallette I think.

Congrats on the purchase!

i'm having an internet geek-out moment. for the last year or so i've started my day with dooce and sweet juniper so it's such a thrill to see dutch in the comments section. hope all's well with wood and juniper, thanks for saying hi.

That's a gorgeous rocker. Great buy. I'd love to have a rocking chair at home, but somehow even the thought of the chair juxtaposed with our cats' tails gives me the heebies!
Enjoy it.

Ahh, I'm envious! I grew up with 2 of those chairs (but without the rockers) and quite a few years they were sold to a dealer by my family, in a moment over-zealous clearing-out of stuff. Sigh! Enjoy them - they're very cool (and comfortable).
