sofa guide

as many of you know we spent a good 6 months looking for a sofa last year. the combination of our tiny doorway and narrow (v-shaped) hallway meant that practically everything we looked at was too big to get through. now that we've settled on one (room and board's andre), i thought it would be fun to compile a guide to sofas made up of models i tested during our search. i've included groupings according to style (mid-century, classic, sleeper, etc.), designer (mitchell gold + bob williams are a favorie) as well as price (there is a roundup of sofas under $1000) so hopefully there will be something in there for everyone. this isn't a definitive look at the entire market but rather groupings that i've personally found to be great models depending on price and style. click here to check it all out- hope you enjoy!

chloe's back

one of the things i get asked about the most these days is the chloe sevigny spread H&G did last year. i'll admit, i was majorly obsessed with her hallway's wallpaper but i'd never been so beseiged with emails asking for full-sized photos, sourcing info and extra copies. thanks to my co-worker katy the full slideshow is now available online, with additional pictures that didn't run online the first time. just click here to check it out- she's got a seriously beautiful home.

craft project

when i get bored i like to do little craft projects around the house using leftover fabric or paper. one of my favorite things to do is use wrapping paper to line drawers, cabinets and closets. i thought my dresser drawers could use a little snazzing up to go with our new quilt so i picked up a few rolls of snow & graham gift wrap (on sale at loom) and cut them to size for my drawers. the best way to finish the project is to cut clear contact paper to size and use that to secure the gift wrap, but i decided to go for simple scotch tape this time because i didn't have any contact paper around the house. and if you get bored? simply peel off and start again- always a fun project for a hot afternoon.

["In the very top photo above Grace's intro is a giraffe from Jonathan Adler. The ceramic vase was made by Kim Westad, which I bought off her Etsy page", The picture directly above this is our bedroom. Above our bed is a painting of mine from several years ago. I used a variety of small glass beads and old photocopies of vintage looking floral motifs."]

["The framed drawing is by Alyson Fox, we did a trade for artwork several months back. The clock is our newest addition which we just picked up at Mxyplyzyk. We are really in love with it. And the furniture piece my husband, Andrew Bowers, made back when he was in school."]

["Shown here is a painting by Nina Surel, another fabulous trade!"]

["The small decoupaged plates are by John Derian, my Mom and I both adore his work so she bought those for me a few years ago. The month of July that is on display is a part of the letterpressed calendar I bought on Etsy last Christmas. The vase is from the Curiosity Shoppe, and in it are dried lotus pods."]

["Drinking tea is one of my favorite things to do in life, especially with my girlfriends out on our back deck. So I just treasure my tea cups and things. Those tea cups were a gift and they are hand painted from San Francisco... The cylindrical thing to the left is a princess's lunch box was a gift that my Grandmother received years ago when they lived in Japan. The above photos are mounted onto recycled barn wood are by another Asheville artist, Rebecca Tolk."]

["This is a photo of our dining room. The alabaster deer head is from The Curiosity Shoppe. On the table is a place mat from chilewich underneath the dried flowers. "]

dream bathroom

when ac and i were putting together his room (the music room) it became rather apparent that i'm something of a nazi when it comes to putting our home together (yeah i know, shocker). i was telling a friend that it was "his" room and he got to pick what went in it (sorry, ac, i know that didn't exactly happen) and she said "well, which room is your room?". to which i replied, um- all of them? ac has been painfully thoughtful to let me do most of the decision making with our furniture, paint colors and accessories but the one thing that won't fly is a pink bathroom. i've always wanted to have a girly sanctuary of pink and white but that will just have to wait until we have more space. in the meantime, i'm fantasizing about this beautiful bathroom from provence restaurant in soho, seen on the bluelines blog. a room covered in book pages with a pink fabric door? major swoon overload...

pratt in copenhagen

as i continue to blog and work on d*s, the one consistent love i have in the design world is student work. i'm always drawn to student shows and exhibitions far more strongly than the big fairs at javits each year. something about the raw talent and creativity they exude is endlessly inspiring for me. because i live in brooklyn i definitely have a soft spot for pratt and their incredibly talented students. so i was thrilled yesterday to hear from pratt student kimberly lewis who's over in copenhagen (along with her classmates) taking part in a textile design studio. she created a blog to mark her progress and work in the class and i've been poring over it all morning. there's something about watching an artist test things out and then hit their stride that's just so exciting. you can click here to check out kim's blog and watch her textile work progress- her latest linen pieces are really beautiful. [thanks, kim!]

d*s reader recs

i haven't done a reader rec in a while so i thought i'd open this one up to you guys. d*s reader monica needs some help with her living room:
"I sure could use your reader's input: We have a living room with two alcoves and I'm completely stumped as to what to do with one of them. I've attached two photos, one of the "good" side of the living room and the other of the wall where I sure could use help. I've taken the Shag down (after I saw this photo I realized just how bad that yellow border looked in that room) and the lamp out too. I've thought about wallpapering the alcoves, painting the alcoves, putting a bookcase in the empty alcove; I'm just not sure what will give the room that finished look. Thanks!"
I know this audience is full of great ideas so please feel free to share yours below. [thanks to monica for sharing her home with us]

sale finds

yesterday i had a meeting near rockefeller center and the lure of an anthropologie sale around the corner was too much to resist. i confined myself to the home section and spent a good 45 minutes trying not to buy all of the cookbooks and colorful hooks they had. i found this colorful tray and thought, well, i've got to do something with it- it's too pretty to pass up. so i plopped it in my bag (along with heidi's beautiful new cookbook!) and came home. when i got home my plan was to hang this on the wall and then i thought- wait, i could use this for the dish rack! i hate the ugly white plastic drying tray that came with our rack and thought, heck, this will be much prettier to look at. so i swapped one for the other and now i'm happy to have a bright pop of color in the corner. you can find similar trays at anthropologie online- i bought this version at the rock center shop.

sneak peek: laura normandin

i don't think i know any of my design-blogging colleagues that don't love laura normandin's work. i've purchased several of her handmade elephants for expecting friends and have been trying to justify buying one of the giraffes for myself. laura has been a craft editor at martha stewart living for over 8 years but creates beautiful handmade goods and fine art from her home in park slope, brooklyn. it's an honor to share photos of her home here today so i hope you'll enjoy them. as always, you can click here to see a slideshow of full sized and (many) additional photos of laura's home. [thanks to laura for sharing her home with us]. enjoy!

["My apartment is basically two rooms in Park Slope Brooklyn. This photo is of my craft supplies. Stacks of them. The painting and birdhouse are by Yvette Rock and the little collage is by Anna Beckman"]

["I have a pretty large deer collection but sadly no great place to display them. Here are a few including a real one on the wall. He's seen better days and is looking a little haggard."]

["My bedroom opens out to the backyard which makes it very light and airy. The art on the left side is also by Yvette Rock, a friend from Cooper Union. Athena Preston made the block printed lamp shade. The script typewriter is an Ebay find. Above the bed are a growing number of specimens I've gotten from friends in Riker Mounts. This quilt is one of my favorite things in the world. It's called a postage stamp design. It's made up of thousands of 1" squares, also from my grandma (do you see a trend, here?). My grandpa, an accomplished woodworker made me this walnut bed when I was little."]

["This little sofa holds the pillows I used to sell. I stopped because they are too big to ship and store. The bird pillow is by Salvor Fauna. The frame and print I made in college. I have been collecting LuRay pastels for a long time. My mom got hooked on Ebay a few years back and bought me many of these pieces. It's mostly from the 50's and each piece is stamped with the year it was made. It comes in 4 colors and grey. Grey is very rare, thus I hardly have any. The book shelf is from Design Within Reach. It's great for storing lots of big books in very little space. The huge book on the bottom is the Audubon Birds of America."]

["Because of lack of space, I don't have much room for aesthetic still lives. But here I can display a few things. I love the color blue. The bird is also from my grandma. The specimen boxes are made by cutting windows in patterned boxes and gluing pieces of glass in the lid. The leather dogwood is by Amy Rogers."]

["My tiny little yard. The butterfly chairs are old Martha by Mail (no longer around) made out of Sunbrella fabric. I highly recommend the Sunbrella for outdoors."]

["Muji containers hold the tatting thread (new and vintage) I use to make my flower hairclips. An old basket holds pearl cotton I use for the crochet bracelets."]

["My bedroom doubles as art studio and craft room. I put up a few shelves to hold all my fabric and old thread holders house the thread. A family friend made the thread holders many years ago and I've collected a few of them. The photocopy on my desk is from The Golden Egg book illustrated by Leonard Weisgard. I do my paintings here on this desk too. The little piece on the wall is by Margaret McCartney of Winter Water Factory fame. Even though at my day job we use fancy computerized sewing machines, I'm happy with my basic Singer."]

["I inherited this piece on the left from my grandma. I love the details and marble. It's something I probably couldn't buy or wouldn't pick out for myself. I grew up knowing it would be mine. With a few other things I drove it all the way to New York from Kansas. My yarn is waiting for the colder months for me to finish ongoing projects."]
