dirt by sarah cihat

brooklyn designer sarah cihat (of rehabilitated dishware fame) has released an elegant but edgy new collection called dirt. comprised of three dogwood themed vases and a collection of black votive candles, it's an interesting move for cihat, whose next step has been much anticipated. i was really excited to see something different, but still in that slightly brooklyn vein of design. cihat's dogwood series contains a white, black and decayed dogwood vase cast in white, black and pink porcelain. i think the white is a really sophisticated look and is destined to be a hit this season (fall and winter for print mags). if you're looking for something edgier check out her votives and wolf head sculpture. there's also a simple series of cups and bowls that have subdued facets for a simple but elegant look. you can click here for more info- the line will be available in fall 2006 at barneys. sarah cihat + chains

ac thinks i may have stumbled into some sort of weird s&m phase because i'm unabashedly into chains right now. i scooped up a chain print from a friend, a mollie dash chain bracelet and then my chain knobs from anthro. and now sarah cihat is releasing a beautiful collection of hand cast porcelain bowls and vases with chain detailing. i'm in heaven. i'm prepping the mini-trend this weekend so tune in on monday for a more fleshed-out look at the chain craze (i also loved the chain project in blueprint this month. i wore mine to dinner last week). these new pieces from sarah just went live last night and you can view the full collection right here...

sneak peek...sarah cihat

our last sneak peek for the day (there are boys coming tomorrow in case anyone is worried) belongs to brooklyn ceramicist sarah cihat. i love the wood grain wallpaper on her walls and had to share this overview and close up shot. the pattern acts as a nice neutral background but gives just the slightest hint of pattern.

[update: the walls are a finish that sarah did herself! it's taupe grey over gloss white paint with the help of a special wood grain squeegee she found "ages ago"]

the future is bright and very, very perfect

well, the future perfect's holiday "gifted" show was hands down, my favorite gettogether of the holiday season. there's nothing like a brooklyn party to make you feel relaxed and not so, you know, scenester-y. although, the future perfect is definitely a scene in itself- it's just a scene in which i feel more comfortable. plus it's right across from my favorite sushi restaurant. bonus!

d*s style summary: cool people, cool store, cool designs, cool vibe, cool neighborhood. just plain cool. seen: designs by online darlings eric ginder and sara cihat. a great installation of lite brite's new neon sconces, and the OSB desk from redstr/collective. best in show? look no further than the most darling little felt birds i've ever seen. honorable mention: inkblot mirrors by DUPD design.

rose + radish: round

i was thrilled to hear about rose + radish's newest show: round. the show focuses on circular shapes and patterns, with an emphasis on detailed surface textures. nama rococo, sarah cihat, mud australia, livingstones and michele de lucchi are just some of the artists being featured at rose + radish's hayes valley gallery space. in addition to the new show, r+r is introducing a third variation on its sixty forty print club series. created by small stump's jill pilotte, the hand-silkscreened, limited-edition print is based on the round theme and 40% of the proceeds will be going to 826 valencia. i'm so excited for the show and can't wait to see it when i head out west for the biz lady night in san francisco [i'm aiming for the week of october 23]. just click here for more information on the new show and new print. alyssa ettinger

i was thrilled to get an email from brooklyn ceramicist alyssa ettinger the other day. alyssa has been working with pottery since she was 14 and now lives in brooklyn and shares a studio space with designers sarah cihat and lorena barrezueta (talk about a studio full of talented women). alyssa's latest collection called "knitware" instantly caught my eye- embossed with a knitware style pattern on each piece, the collection is comprised of a series of coasters that look like someone took your favorite cableknit sweater and pressed it gently on top of each coaster. the comfort and warmth that comes from knitware patterns is only enhanced by the warmth you feel from handmade pottery. alyssa's beautiful knitware series is available in your choice of subdued glaze colors, including celery, vanilla, slate and of course, unglazed. alyssa also produces a lovely collection of bowls and small cups in simple but sophisticated styles and glazes that would make a wonderful housewarming gift (or just a gift for yourself!). prices are reasonable at $39 for a set of 4 handmade coasters. you can click here view alyssa's entire collection, place an order and find out more about her background. enjoy! sexy lady *

i love sarah cihat's work- it's so fun. her sexy lady plates are some of my favorites. ok, they're not really called sexy lady plates, but that's what i call them. available at the future perfect, clio home and various retail locations (pricing may vary at retail locations, but they're all quite affordable). enjoy!

improved crockery

i like the word crockery. it has such a nice sound to it, crockery. makes me want to say it again and again. anyway, before you think i've gone mental, let me explain why i'm murmuring "crockery" over and over in my head like a mad woman...clio home just added a great new plate and tea set to their collection called "improved crockery"- they're designer silk screened images of men and women on vintage crockery pieces. they're oh so sarah cihat. they're not dishwasher safe, but these aren't really everyday pieces- i guess they'd be funny to use to serve tea and biscuits on or something. the line ranges from $37-$130 and must be ordered via phone, as their online stock is out. you can contact clio home at 212.966.8991. enjoy!

ok so i lied. time out's gift guide inspired me....

i must have died and gone to heaven with this little lady- southern born, brooklyn living, sara cihat designed the rehabilitated dishware (remind you of anyone else...?) line that is super cute and dying to be scooped up for holiday dinner parties. or, if you're like me, will be scooped up and used to display leftover halloween candy (thanks mom!)...the whole thing is made from dishware she finds at salvation army type stores that is cleaned up and re-screened and glazed. pretty neat.

anyway, go check her out. cool stuff. hoping for a better thursday....
